That's almost the circumstance where I learned to play as a 13-year-old kid. Full 18-hole course but family owned. I was there almost every day, played with uncles and friends, played with the owner's son.

Still there, too.

It's called Golf 'cos they couldn't think of another 4-letter word that wasn't already used.
