Going to Scotland

Forget about the car museums.. do some distillery tours! William and Grant is supposed to have a fantastic visitors center for Balvenie, and many other distilleries have great tours dinners and stuff =)

If you head east of edinbughyou should stop at the Myreton Motor museum. It's just outside North Berwick,

And make sure you have your 7 pounds entry fee in cash.

Edinburgh is a lovely town. Be sure to walk the Royal Mile and see the sights along the way. Hollyrood Palace is at the end of the Mile, where Mary Queen of Scots was murdered (check out her room). The Scottish Parliament building is there, too.

Also, check out Royal Mile Whiskies, a fantastic liquor store up near Edinburgh Castle. At Edinburgh Castle you'll find stunning views of the City and the Firth of Forth there. There are many stores along the Royal Mile, all with their specialty Scot products including woolen clothing, kilts, etc.

The National Art Museum is a must-see, and also the Royal Botanical Gardens.

Public transportation is very good, you can catch a bus on practically every street corner, fare is very cheap and the buses are clean and efficient.

What impresses me most about Edinburgh are the people. Very polite and friendly. My wife and I were riding on a bus once there, and an ELDERY lady offered her seat to me! Somehow, she made me proud of my Scot heritage. :yesnod:

And be sure to read some Robert Burns before you go, just to get you in the right frame of mind!

Great place, Edinburgh. :yesnod:

Pick me up a few bottles of Macallan 18 and 21 while you're at it

I am heading out to Edinburgh and Glasgow for a few days soon. Anybody have suggestions for car-related museums/shops and any favorite haunts in either city? Vintage tools and books are great, too.

Thanks in advance,

Just remember, THEY pronounce it "edin bro" NOT "edin burg"!

Your right, the Scots are very friendly. My wife and I attended the fringe festival a couple of years ago and tacked on a castle and distillery tour....worth the effort. Highlands are beautiful in summer, just watch out for the midges. Last suggestion would be to attend the military tattoo- tickets sell out fast so would recommend buying them in advance.

Jeremy,

Sounds like fun! We just got back from vacation with 3 days in London and 7 days in Ireland. If you get the opportunity in the future, I definitely recommend going to Ireland as it's beautiful country. We really enjoyed the area around Galway with the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren as well as the Dingle Peninsula. And of course there's the Guinness and Jameson sites to tour and sample in Dublin!

I was a little nervous (OK more than a little nervous) about driving on the left but had no problems at all with it even in the busy areas. GPS is definitely your friend although it took us on some very interesting one lane roads in our travels.

Scotland is an awesome place. Edinburgh is very cool and a relatively safe place. One note though. The correct pronunciation of the name is not even close to Edin Bro. You've got to listen to the locals and pronounce it the was they do. Not that hard and gets you way more respect.
I'm from 30 miles south of the City!

Yes. To imitate the Scottish brogue, just fill your mouth full of marbles and speak Gaelic.

Simple!
