Going 5-speed

I've decided to start gathering parts for an eventual swap to a 5-speed. I'm going to stay with the ribcase that came with the 1275 for now, but I figured it was a good idea to start gathering the bits. Given the driving distances here, that overdrive would be nice someday.

I'm assuming that the Datsun 210 5-speed is the way to go? There seem to be 2 kits out there, Rivergate and Morrisservice. Any other thoughts on this? I'm planning to use the Rivergate instructions to make sure I've got the right transmission.

Some unrelated parts serendipity last week got me thinking about gathering up what I might need for the conversion. I was able to solve another desire by taking advantage of an available part from someone (I'm not telling until it arrives /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif).

Paul's kit utilizes the stock datsun clutch plate, and requires machining the flywheel. The rivergate kit uses a custom clutch. Prices are similar, but Paul is on the left coast so he may be the better option (in terms of shipping costs and phone calls should you need help). I've heard good things about both companies. I've never heard any negative things about Pauls kit, and only a few trivial negative comments about the people/product at Rivergate.

I have Pauls kit in my car. Other than having Paul machine the flywheel its a straight forward swap. Nice thing about his is the disc, clutch, and throwout bearing are stock datsun parts. They are available at any parts store should you need them. Paul is a very nice guy and very helpful.

I've had the Rivergate kit in in my bugeye for about 5 yrs and have been very happy with it. They were helpful with all my ?s. You are smart to start looking because the 5 speeds are getting hard to find. Once you have one, everything else falls into place. The next step, if not already taken is a 3.9 rear end. Then..........

say it... then... supercharger!

You snagged a 210 'box, didn't you!

Drew had posted a message on the spritespot about a gearbox for sale. I think it was Bill M that was selling it.

Lets start a rumor.

I heard it was a Borg T-5 box with a Cosworth YBB Engine going in the tunebug....

Actually, my mystery part is not the 210 transmission, though I am talking to the chap on SpriteSpot about the one he's selling. He's checking for me to make sure it's the correct model, and hopefully we'll be able to work a deal.

I've already considered a supercharger for the 948, but decided to go the 1275 route instead. Would I build a supercharged 1275 some day? I certainly wouldn't rule it out. All sorts of things are possible. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I have Paul's Morrisservice kit in my midget and it is the best thing I've ever done for the car. Of course going with Paul was a no-brainer for me since he is slightly more than walking distance from where I live. That made it nice since I was able to meet with him in person and there was zero shipping involved. I just dropped stuff off and picked it back up when it was ready. (I was also sold on using the Datsun clutch pack as well). He's a super nice guy, his kit comes with great instructions and he will definitely answer any questions you might have. I finished mine in a weekend, though I probably could have done it in a day.

Funny how life is, I didn't consider it until all the planets lined up. Gravitional pull being what it is, and.........it has lead to so much more. I really didn't think the engine bay was to bad, but if you are going to that effort, it needed repainting, looking at the newly cleaned and repainted engine bay, the wiring looked really bad, so it needed replacing, looking at pre motor pictures to reinstall, the painting of the engine bay was desperatelly needed. Now, the interior really doesn't look that good, but seems it will have to wait.

I expect that sort of thing to happen, that's why in the end I took so much of my donor car. Lots of projects once the engine swap is done. That way, as money permits, I'll be able to have an upgrade project ready and waiting. Also, now I've got things I can be working on while still driving the Tunebug, like the disc brake front suspension rebuild.

I know that if I do wind up keeping the Tunebug long term, it will eventually be rebuilt, one bit at a time.

And -no- it isn't me who is selling the Datsun tranny, I'm keeping my only spare for my future needs. I just saw an ad for one and passed it along.

I fixed my post, Bill. I couldn't remember when I entered it who I had emailed. I guess I'm slipping a bit. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

For what it's worth, I found 2 Datsun trannys in a junkyard in Tucson, AZ. I suspect there might be several more in the yard next door too. The owners have no idea that they have any value at all. I also see them often on ebay...

I've just bought one from a fellow on spritespot, actually. One of these days I'll try the yards in Salt Lake and see if any show up there. Can't ever have too many parts.

Did I just say that? Oh no, I'm turning into a Parts hoarder. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I just saw a 1976 B210 engine and transmission for sale. Yes, I know I only need the transmission but I may need to bid on both. Is 1976 not good? What is different? can it be fixed?

Ditto on the yr. It needs the F as the first letter on the serial no. I think it probably is a 4 speed.
