Bayless, you should come down and visit sometime. We have a pretty decent night sky on clear ones. You can't see the Milky Way like you used to but it's still visible.

For Basil and Walt, I know the western part of Oklahoma can actually get dark. The whole state has a population of something around 3.5 million. Well over 2 million of those are in the OKC and Tulsa metro areas, leaving fewer than 1.5 for the rest of the state. Starting with 70,000 square miles and taking out 5,000 for the two cities that leaves 65,000 for those 1.5 million people. Since the eastern half of the state has about double the population of the western half, that leaves 32,500 square miles for 500,000 people or just over 15 people per square mile. Yes it should get dark at least in some places. It is my great misfortune that I rarely get to see the spectacular beauty of western Oklahoma. And currently having the honor of tending to a very sick wife, it may be a while. Hopefully someday we can both do that again. In fact, we have wanted to make the drive to Albuquerque where we were married 64 years ago. I understand they even have a monster balloon fiesta marking our anniversary. That's really nice of the city to do that.
 
I nearly went to the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta this year, but I'd have needed to take a day off from work and felt it would be better used elsewhere.
 
If the sky is clear of clouds and moisture, between midnight and daybreak here, the sky looks like being in a Planetarium. A faint light to the North is the only distraction. The best place for zero light we've ever been is outside of Moab Utah at Edge Of The Cedars State Park. Zero light after dark 360 degrees, truly a star watcher's dream! (y) (y)
Oh yeah, we drove 70 miles to get bread and milk, we got bread but missed the milkman by 2 days! :rolleyes2:

That's a bit south of Moab near Blanding. I originally hoped to camp there on my way to Goblin - From there was going to take 95 west instead of going north to Moab but learned that 95 was closed do to a bridge being repaired west of Blanding.
 
Huge fan of Goblin Valley and that whole area. Camp there pretty often, and have spent a full moon evening wandering around the actual park. Glad you got to see it, Basil. What a place.
