Get the car, get the girl

My son posted this on Facebook tonight. Since this is a special day for my wife and I, I thought I'd post it here. Just goes to show the magic of these cars.

Even at 14, my dad knew his cars. He'd never seen one like this though. It was red, sleek, low to the ground, and had an emblem on the front that read 'Austin Healey'. It rolled up to the lone gas station in Le Grand, CA where my dad was loitering with his buddies. As this gorgeous woman got out of the car my dad said, "I'm going to get one of those". His friend asked "The car or the girl?" and my dad responded "If I got the car, I think I could get the girl".

4 years later my father bought this 1960 Austin Healey 3000, a few years after that he met my mother in the dorms at UCSB, and today they celebrate 50 years of marriage. Today is a day worth toasting to so cheers to you Mom and Dad. On to 100! #getthecar #getthegirl.

Rob,

Wish your parents a Grand, Happy, and continuing Wedding Celebration. I can directly relate to your dad's experience as I also met my wife in my Healey and we were blessed to celebrate our 50th 2-years ago.

All the best to your Father, Mother, and Family,
Ray(64BJ8P1)

Congratulations :
,I been there and done that 50 year bit too.
However, today I think you gotta get the girl first so she can help U pay for the car.,Man how times have changed?

Wonderful story. Excellent photo. I have to agree with Keoke. My wife of 21 years was the little voice that said, "do it" with regard to buying the basket case 100 that I've now had for 19 years. We just had our 40th in March. She has never once asked to drive it despite many offers/suggestions by me. She does like riding it it for reasonable small trips but we both laugh about "Healey hair" which is what she ends up with. Needless to say, that isn't an issue with my chrome dome. No doubt about it , my indulgences cost more than hers but the support always seems to be there. I am a very fortunate man.

Jon, I laughed at the idea of Healey Hair. When I was in college in the mid 1960's, my roommate and I double dated in my Healey. Not the best way to take out two girls who had spent the afternoon getting their hair just so, but it was the only car available. The two girls had to sit in the jump seats since the guys were too big to fit. Needless to say, after a 20 mile ride at freeway speeds, their hair was a mess. We had a good time never the less. Wonderful memories.

Beautiful sentiments.
The world is best when we have stories to share like this.
Doug
