When I was a kid (12) we lived in North Hollywood, CA, briefly. I worked on weekends picking Dandelions out of the next-door day-care center lawn and watering her trees. I got $10 a week. I gave my mother $8 to supplement our food bill and kept $2 for me. I would walk all the way to Magnolia Blvd. to a hobby shop and buy a new AMT model every week and build it. I would side track (wore my sneakers out) to George Barris' shop along the way (actually, out of the way) and he would let me galk at his latest creations. Those were the days. We were on a first name basis. He was Mr. Barris and I was the little s..t.

 Great story. I wonder if you called him up and said, "Hello Mr. Barris, I'm the little ----" if he would remember you.

I grew up in North Hollywood.
Once when I was standing in front
of the chain that was drapeed across the driveway,
He came out and said "Kid, you've been here all day,
what da ya want?"
I told him I just wanted to see the cars.
He took me inside and walked me around.
then turned to me and said, "Hey, ya want to work?"
I said "SURE!".
He gave me some Bonami and towels and took me to
one of the back garages. and said "Start Polishing"
He had me polishing this car with wings from underneath.
It was Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. A grrrrreat big boat tail roadster.
I still see him at some of the shows that I go to.
Nice guy

Great, next time you see him let him know it's my turn... but I don't do detail work.

David Starr Jordan Junior High School, otherwise known as Jordan. Now those were the halcyon days of my youth. I came from a rural school in Louisiana to a very progressive California school system of the 50's. (we lived in both Burbank and N.H.) P.E. in Louisiana consisted of smoking cigarettes behind the gym. In Cal, we were graded according to ability into A,B or C groups, with never a down time. We had offered to us three (count'em, 3) shop classes. I took metal and print shop. Spanish (that was before the invasion from Mexico, and when every liquor store in the valley was owned by an Anglo and not a Korean), chorus, art, etc....things that were light years from Louisiana.

We lived on Brighton St. and then on Hollywood Way. Came out of Cameron, La. and Hurricane Audrey (1957) (instant poverty) to The Golden State. We didn't make it and ended up back in th e South. On the other hand, my first cousin (a true Californian) lived next to Bob Hope and played with his son Kelly. My aunt lived later in the Hollywood Hills (you know what I am talking about).

Yes, I was once a Californian, I now suck crawfish heads.
