Generator Rebuild

The generator on 64 BJ8 is in need of a rebuild. I found a source on the web....Star Auto Electric in Monrovia,California, who provides such a service. Has anyone had any experience with these folks? Any other sources that I should consider?

There's a shop nearby where I live run by some real nice folks--Wenger's Motor Repair in Mechanicsville, Md. The number is 301-373-5162. They've done starters and generators for me and Healey Surgeons sends their stuff here. Ask for Clarence or Jessie.
 
Is there some kind of taboo against simply replacing the brushes,bearings and if rquired undercutting the communtator slots. Acually its quite simple to refurbish a generator.-FWIW---Keoke
 
Ran across this site. Pretty cool. They will build a alternator within your generator and retain the stock look of the unit. Pretty darn expensive but really cool. That way you could run all the accessories you wanted in the car and still maintane the look of the original. Idf that is important to you.

Has anyone converted to a alternator? Was it easy or tough? I am thinking about it because I want to add some lights to a light bar and want to install a radion with a amp and all. Don't know if the gen take take the load? This is in the future but not right now. Just in the planning stages. Other issues to deal with. But curious if anyone has converted and what kit did they use

Hi Skip, being sneaky I am looking for one of the small alternators that with a bit of case maching can be fit inside a gutted generator case. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif-Keoke
 
HiTony, There are a lot of alternator conversions out here in Healey land. But I doubt that there is going to be a big upsurge in "Gener-nator" installations at close to $800 apiece. Most converters use the alternator of their choice or one from the MGB cars.-FWIW---Keoke
 
Keoke I saw a small 100 amp alternator that was on a Toyota fork lift. I am pretty sure that if you removed the pole shoes from a generator you could fit it inside. You would have to remove the mounting ears from the alt but it might just work. I had never seen an alternator that small much less one that put out 100 amps. Skip

I agree it is a simple rebuild I did my first one on a 1955 Chevrolet at 16 and for the most part they are all the same. I just converted to an alternator and it wasn`t nearly as hard as I tried to make it. I used a small 60 amp nippondenso alternator and turned spacers on the lathe and used the stock generator bracket with a long grade 8 bolt through the whole thing and then used a ford truck alternator bracket underneath to hold the belt tension. It works great, I used the stock wiring to excite the alt and run the dash light with one extra large wire back to the starter solenoid. Small,light,neat and works great. Skip
