Jeff, sounds like you need to calibrate your monitor! Look at the image below. You should be able to see the difference between lines A and B, and the background around the 1.8 to 2.2 mark. If you can't see the gray vertical lines at all, you're waaaay too dark. If that is the case, go HERE and scroll down a bit for the calibration techniques.
Great! Road & Track magazine has been showing stuff like that on their last page (sent in by readers) for years...you should send it in.
