I guess this isn't really a joke but it always struck me funny somehow. This is for real - not far from where we live.

Jeff, sounds like you need to calibrate your monitor! Look at the image below. You should be able to see the difference between lines A and B, and the background around the 1.8 to 2.2 mark. If you can't see the gray vertical lines at all, you're waaaay too dark. If that is the case, go HERE and scroll down a bit for the calibration techniques.
