Over the past two nights, my car has transformed itself into the TR6 I once loved.
I was at my wits end trying to sort out an overheating problem. Much of last fall and early winter was spent on this problem.
I changed thermostats several times, water pump, sending unit, and toyed with timing amd carbs. After numerous flushes, the temperature would bounce around making me think there may be a flake of rust obstructing a journal.
It has been very frustrating.
Last night, when working to pull the speedo to change the voltage stabilizer, I found that the screw holding the stabilizer had vibrated loose. The stabilizer had been losing it's ground and periodically regaining it. It just so happened to start regaining it when I began with the flushes.
Don't you love these cars.
At least I know that everything else in the cooling system is like new.

I had a similar thing only mine was showing overheating all the time. It turned out the DPO had removed the voltage stabilizer all together and bypassed it so the intrument was at generator voltage all the time. I have a nice picture of my temperature sender in a pot of water on my kitchen stove with an OHM meter attached to the sender and a digital thermomiter in the water. My wife was not home at the time and she has not seen the picture.

Mine showed hot most of the time but occasionally read correctly. When I refinished my dash I found that the PO had lost the mounting screw and stuck the VS on the speedo mounting shaft and it was just resting against the ground.
