Gas tank sealer...whats your opinion?

Frank,
Thanks for those photos! Nice job with your tank...looks really nice!

The sides and baffles are made of flat pieces, which could be cut out from a single sheet of metal. The stampings would be a bit harder to reproduce, but could be done using steel bar and wood blocks.
If you are interested in that kind of work, there was a nice "how to" article in the Nov/Dec 2010 issue of Home Shop Machinist. It includes topics such as forming seams; bung holes of various shapes & sizes; leak testing; weld joint types and more. The photos show some really nice reproductions in various stages.

The comment about TR250 kind of caught my eye, but the tank didn't look right ... turns out it was for a Testa Rossa 250

Thanks Randall! Ordered it today...

Buy a new one. Sealing, patching etc. is not worth the hassle.

Where? It's definitely a hassle, but I can't find anyone selling brand new Mk1 GT6 fuel tanks.

Used the POR kit myself - still in the curing phase.

Actually the silver in the POR product is not pigment. They use the clear base with metallic filings suspended in the clear. The theory behind it is after brushing the sealer the filings are to settle into the pin holes thus sealing the tank or what ever.

Richter, out of curiosity, how did you get the fuel tank out of your GT6? It has been years since I painted our GT6 and one task I remember having to give up on was getting the fuel tank "out". The methods listed in books did not work at all as there was interference with other items. I could not turn it or position it in any way to get ours out.

I'm not being facetious when I say I don't know if I could explain it. You ever been driving along and have a near miss with another car and you just KNEW that you were hit, but somehow managed to totally avoid contact? I think it's like that.

In practice, I had the hose disconnected from the vent, and the line disconnected from the bottom, pulled the cables from the sender, and removed the fuel filler hose and cap. Then holding the wires on the rear side of the car, I want to say I was able to wiggle the tank down so that the rear lip was down at an angle, and had just enough room to slip the frontmost piece past the crossbar and come up and out. My memory may be a little hazy - I remember trying about 20-30 different times with no real signs of progress and then suddenly held the thing in my hands much to my surprise.

Now, as for mechanics secrets, I used a healthy amount of 'verbal lubricant' and when doing things like this, I keep a rubber mallet nearby. Not for hitting anything, heaven forbid. But when you get fed up it has a good heft, flies a good distance across the yard, and it's big enough to find when you're done.

What's funnier is I've had to take it in and out 3 or 4 times, and it's ALWAYS a nightmare to get out. (Healthy disregard for the laws of physics helps!) but it always just drops back in like nothing.

I was referring to the TR2/3 tanks listed by the big 3.
Don't know anything about GT6's.

This may be a dumb question, but are the GT6 tanks different than the Spifire's? My guess is they are.

On the original question, I have used the Bill Hirsch product twice, the first time no issues for the remaining 9 years or so I owned the car. The 2nd time I got flaking and clogging problems, but I am thinking the tank maye have been treated before or something, not sure, but not quite as confident in my endorsement of the sealer as I was before.
