TR2/3/3A gas tank in a 1961 tr3

I am putting the gas tank in a 1961 tr3 and have no experience with the later series gas tanks. What I am wondering is how much of the gas tank sits on those little brackets with full load and yet lets the filler hole line up. This tank seems to just catch about an inch with a comfortable line up. Is that right? Does anyone have a picture of this area they would like to post? Thanks in advance.

So I am assuming that the gas tank holding band comes down over the tank and base bracket and the tank just rest on the one inch edge of the trunk base bracket with no padding or should there be a rubber pad or perhaps some felt like in the early tr3s.

Hi Steve,

Would love to be able to help you out but both my 60's were different when I took them apart so I don't know what would be original. On one the gas tank strapping was covered in felt where it contacted the tank, so only on the side and top. The other one had rubber strips on the tank that the straps rested against...the thin rubber strips wrapped around the bottom of the tank as well I believe.

Here is the tank with the rubber straps

TRF sells felt for under the straps and the tank itself.

I bought the car from the 2nd owner who owned it since 1967. The car was shipped from the factory to a new owner in Japan. Apparently (according to the PO) the original owner had the interior done in this orange color as "rustproofing". The PO called it "Okinawa Orange"

Here's a shot of mine with the early tank. The rubber pieces under the fuel tank are from MGB battery mount. I replicated the original felt on the straps by gluing together two layers of thinner black felt.

We are doing a 61 in the shop now ,we made 2 rubber 1/8 thick pads for the tank to sit on,glued to the brackets. Then used some scotch brite pads cut into strips to act as the felt on the straps (glued also). This seams to hold it very securely in place, and looks great though I doubt if it will ever be seen again....

Is this the same car you're doing all the metalwork on in another thread?

Yes it is Mark. Could have driven it as it was, but I wanted to get to know the car better and make it right where I knew that it wasn't.

Cheers,
David

Thanks all for your help and again a special thanks to Don and his photo. That is exactly what I need to see that the tank just caught the end of the bracket. For some reason, the idea that the tank only caught the end did not make any sense to me.
