TR2/3/3A gas pedal rod

My gas pedal rod has a deep grove cut into the shaft from the spring washer deal at the end. I am thinking I should be able to fill that with some mig weld and grind that smooth. Plus there is a hole for the pin close by and what is a good way to plug the little hole from welding up—little wood piece? And will a weld weaken the rod or make it brittle or something or is brazing better, or what is a good way?

I think the hard part will be keeping it from warping, but with some patience you should be able to get true again. You could mig weld it but mig tends to be kind of messy. I'd find someone with a TIG to do it. I don't think damage from the heat will be significant and brazing, while requiring a lower temperature, still requires a lot of heat and over a much wider area. As for the hole, get a piece of solid copper wire of the appropriate gauge, doesn't have to fit perfectly, and stick it through the hole when welding.

Good call on the copper wire Tom. I guess I am still a carpenter, and oh yes I wish I had a tig set. I used to build scaffolding and tents for tig welders on the pipe line pumping stations and would watch them weld those huge stainless pipes that were x-rayed 100% pure. Quiet and clean
