Gas filler tube gasket

I have now destroyed 3 rubber gaskets that fit the filler tube to the body. If I get the body in the grove, the filler cap sits up very high with the tube flange on top and too low with the flange on the bottom. Where do I get one that fits proper so it appears as in the A/M Restoration book? I have been getting them from Moss and cutting bottom off.

Havent had my BJ8 for decades..Remember removing the gas fill er tube, placing the gasket aound the hole, flat part down, lubing the tube and sliding it in and setting the height as it is connected to the gas tank.


Not sure this helps......but sounds like installation issue......

The problem is the filler tube flange. I mounted with the flange above the gasket, the cap sits about an inch higher than the gasket. If the flange is mounted below the gasket the filler tube does not reach the top of the gasket and the cap will not fit on. It has been suggested that I grind off the flange.

Is the flange supposed to go inside the gasket somehow; i.e. is there a groove for it?

No grove. Unless they have been selling me the wrong gasket.

They must have changed the tube somewhere along the line. I have a BN6 and a BT7 and both have a smooth filler tube with no flange. Installation is as HEALEYJAG describes - put the grommet in the hole & slide the tube in.

I notice Moss shows the same grommet part # for BN4 thru BJ8 and their drawing doesn't show a flange on the tube. Don't know what a purist would say but I would be tempted to remove the flange...

I have replaced the seals on my Sprite side curtains. I don't recall if I bought them from Moss or Vicky Brit. When I put the hard top on my car and it was rained on for the first time the inside of the car was soaked. It turned out that the new seals were not wide enough and left a large gap at the top. I bought another set from Macgregor and they fit perfectly into place. He sells the "petrol" filler grommet for the big Healeys and I'd bet that his fits properly. The BN4 I am restoring has the flange resting right on top of the grommet and it doesnt seem to be sticking up too high. The flange is actually a swagged section of the pipe. If you tried to remove it you would be making the tube a two piece tube.

Heres a follow up with pics from the car I am restoring. The tube is stamped "Westwood" and a pat. number on the flange. from the top of the flange to the top of the tube where the gas cap will seat is .470 inches high. I am sure this is the original tube to this car. In the one picture you can see inside the tube and can see that the flange is pressed or "swagged" into the tube and is not removable. Hope this helps. Of course I suppose there are different tubes and manufacturers used throughout the production runs. This car is an early longbridge car so it very well may differ from all others.
