And literally true. One of the reasons you see so many chinese tattoos is because it is a symbolic language. (like emojis). Many reasons for this - some good; symbols are a powerful means of communication. Some not so good - people's diminished attentions spans and the continued memeification of the world and the weirdness of trying to fit things into a 280 character tweet.

Even the Bible. Preachers have shifted from preaching from the Epistles of Paul to the words of Jesus in the gospel. Paul was a master of rhetoric and exposition - Jesus was a master of story and symbol - it is much easier to move to story than to unpack rhetoric; particularly with a largly biblically illiterate population.
