Fuel tank installation

Any particular words of wisdom regarding the proper installation procedure for a BE fuel tank?

make sure it is well grounded as the sending unit will need it

You may want to contact Regularman (a.k.a. Kim Webb) before re-mounting the tank. He prefers to calibrate fuel gauges to match the gauges when the sending unit is installed in the tank. Since you were asking about the fuel gauge in your other thread, you may want to take this opportunity (with the tank out) to bench calibrate the system BEFORE the tank is back in the car.

Installing a tank is about as easy a job as you are going to get on one of our cars.

You can also use a floor jack and 2x6 to lift and lower as needed. that worked for me.

I put mine in as Alan suggests. Put something between the floor jack head and the tank so you don't scratch it. Does a BE tank have the rubber strips fitted on top of the tank like the later Midgets?

Not as easy as I had hoped!! Does the rubber grommet go on the body before the filler tube goes through the hole in the rear deck? If so how? I've tried it both way unsuccessfully over the last hour or so.

I seem to recall the rubber grommet on body first then wiggle the tube in - try dish detergent and water to lube

Is this a NOS grommet, used grommet, or new reproduction?

just sitting here thinking that the only grommet on mine is between the filler and the rear of the car - not the deck, so, I'll bow out now

Both gromets on first then slide tube up through. Four hands work well.

Grommet is new. I don't remember if it's NOS or a reproduction. Very tight fit when the grommet is already installed. Impossible to get the grommet on if I slide the filler through the hole first. For reference this is the same as Moss P/N 280-105 GROMMET, filler neck.

I can see how this could be much easier for non-Bugeye tanks with the filler tube and the tank separated.

Yes is hard, use a bit of greese on the tank spout and have at it.

The top 3/4 inch of the spout is a bit larger than the rest.

I just ripped the grommet trying to do it dry. Will order a new grommet this morning then try again well lubricated.

I cut a small 45 degree bevel on the grommet to help it get a an easier start. I would also like to mention that the grommet is now cracked and in need of replacement 1.5 years later.

New grommet came from Moss yesterday. Super fast delivery, about 50 hours from initial order to arriving at my door. The grommet was unfortunately malformed and unusable. Installation delayed again!
