Fuel tank ground

HI Skip, Yes I ran a ground wire secured under one of the sender retaining screws over to the left hand side of the car structure. Use soldered connectors at both ends.---Keoke

Yes. The original relied on the metal line from tank to pump for ground. If you now have a flexible connection between tank & pump, the originally intended ground is gone.

Skip, a properly working Healey fuel guage dances all around unless the tank is absolutely full.--Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Found this old post after I had some questions about fuel tank sender grounding. So, does anyone know if it is true that the early cars used no ground wire on the tank sender?

Yes, there was no ground wire. As Dave said, a ground wire was not needed with the original configuration with a steel line going to the fuel pump.

Noticed that the new wiring harness for my BJ7 project did not include a ground wire for the fuel tank/sender. Neither did one show on the wiring diagram. Because the fuel tank is somewhat insulated from the chassis, just as a precaution, I added one (exactly as Keoke described above.) Nice to have my suspicions and actions confirmed.

If there is an added fuel filter between the tank and the engine, does this require an added ground?

YES !
AT The sender..External Ground can be unreliable.

Sure enough...I ran a tester over the braided fuel line, and it does indeed transfer a ground to the tank. That explains why the ground that was on my tank looked so home made!

Thanks!
