Fuel Pump Selection

I can't express how enjoyable it is to read through this stuff and how much a novice such as myself can learn just spending a couple minutes an evening reading the postings. I am curious though, why not replace the fuel pump with the original SU? What benefit or reason for using a different type? It seems like allot of effort to change. I've not needed to replace mine yet, but when the time comes, I would like to be sure to do it right.

Hey, I've seen those pictures before... on the MM board!

This info is coming to you too late but I'll post it for those who might come across this thread later. I am among those who would have discouraged you from the Teflon tape (for the same reasons mentioned above). The Teflon dope isn't much better in this application. Another thing to avoid (AT ALL COSTS) is RTV or other silicone sealants... simply do not use them anywhere near gasoline. When I need to seal threaded connections on fuel systems I use Permatex-2B (that's the thick brown sealant in a "toothpaste" tube). You can also use the thinner Aviation-Form-A-Gasket. Both of these are non-hardening gasket sealants that resist attack by gasoline.
 
Yes, I've been on MiniMania since the bad-old Hairlip Mini days. Got a little ugly, you may remember. Changed my user name a few years ago, to get out of the BC spotlight. I do not post there very often, but am a regular lurker.

I've owned seven Minis over the years, and drove them as my daily driver until about three years ago. It seems like the introduction of the new BMW 'mini' has resulted in an inflation of the prices of our old Minis, and it kind of soured me on the whole thing.

I switched over to a Midget, and I'm really enjoying it. I've adopted a lot of my old Mini modifications, and they carry over very well, so far. Now, if I could only figure out this strange new suspension...

I will pick up some of that Permatex, and keep it on hand. The TFE was recommended by a local who races a Chevy Vega ( a real Cosworth, no less.) However, I'll keep an eye on things. I appreciate the heads up.
 
BC no longer posts on the MM board. For a while he was adopting new pseudonyms/names and re-joining long enough to stir the pot and then they'd kick him off the board again. I've always handled him with kid gloves and kept my distance. I never posted on any of the threads started by him or aimed at him. I see his auctions on eBay so he's still in business.

The Cosworth was always the cream of the Vega crop. I still see them around periodically and unlike the generic Vega the Cosworths still have a following and command a decent price.
 
Well, the MM board is probably better off. Oh well; I wish him luck.

Update on the pump installation:

I was getting some overflow from the HIF, so I have turned the pressure down to about 1.75 PSI (I say 'about' because of the error inherent to the gauge). No more leaking from the overflow tube, but I do get a slight hesitation if I get off the pedal, and then give it a punch. Probably need to raise the pressure a tad more, but I'm going to hold off.

Given my setup: basically stock 1275, HIF6, MiniMania inlet manifold, LCB header, pertronix, and I'm using a BDL needle in the HIF. Prior to the fuel pump episode, I noticed some hesitation on acceleration above about 2500/3000 RPM, which was eliminated if I applied a little choke. That tells me I need a richer needle? I'm thinking of trying a BDK.

Point being: further fiddling with the pump pressure now might be useless when I'm installing a new needle shortly. So, I'll call it done for the moment, and I'll update when it's appropriate.

After driving these fantastic LBCs for some 30 years, I'm still asking questions and seeking advice. Consider LBC ownership a continual learning experience.

As for why I chose this pump: the advice earlier in the thread seems sound, and besides...I am incapable of leaving these cars alone. I'm just not happy unless I can tinker, and make it my own. Probably a flaw in my DNA.
