TR2/3/3A Fuel Delivery Issue

Thanks for the feedback Don! FYI, the 59 that I'm working on now is originally black with a red interior. I will be using some pics I took of yours at our TTC BBQ and while at BCD for inspiration.

Cheers

Hello Tush

Not fuel related.

Looking at the video I presume you have a rack and pinion steering mod.
Have you done away with the vacuum advance connection or had you already removed it before you started the video?

David

Hi David,

Yes, on the 60, I have the Moss steering rack conversion installed. So far, I quite like it.

I am running the car with the SU's as it came to me from the PO. It has the vacuum port on the bottom of the carb plugged and the advance module plugged as well. I am also using the distributor that came in the car as it may have been matched with the motor/carbs/mods

Check for fuel line obstruction.
Similar symptoms to yours.
This happened to me at Stowe 2 yrs ago.
Removed obstruction which was a a small blob of cured Silicone gasket goo (from the fuel sender gasket) that worked its way to the inline fuel filter ahead of the fuel pump.
Because of the inline filter's small diameter opening, the rubbery blob just plugged it.
Tricky to find but easy to fix once found.

Thanks for the replies guys. I appreciate it.

So, just a quick update. Took it for a drive this morning. Turned the fan on manually and ran it the entire time. Car never got over 185 F for the entire drive...

Barely made it back home...ran great for about ten minutes....started to die at idle. When trying to drive, it feels like it's starving for fuel...absolutely no power when I put my foot into it....boggy and sounding awful almost like it was running on 2 cylinders. Died when I got back to my driveway....still, temperature never over 185 F.

I'm going to start looking at electrical. Going to swap out the current pertronix distributor with a points one....after that, going to swap the coil and see if the problem persists.

I might even just for fun run fuel out of a Jerry can with an electric pump straight to the carbs to rule out a clogged fuel line/tank outlet etc. I'll see if it dies the same way after 12 minutes.

On the plus side, I did get more gas in the tank while I was out on my drive....I had been doing so much testing over the previous week, I was almost out of gas....

Bummer!
So, the entire trip was only 10 minutes? Did it gradually run worse, or 'all of a sudden' get bad?

I'd be very careful about driving with a gas can and electric fuel pump. If you had to make an evasive maneuver to avoid an accident, or hit a large bump, the gas could dump out and ignite before you had time to stop the car. Be careful with that approach as it may be your last. Maybe you could try a longer drive with the hood removed -it might show that your problem is somehow temperature (under the hood) related.

When I first drove mine, I thought I had (over) heating problems too. My gauge was incorrect and my timing was off. But I also think a new engine needs a few hundred miles before it cools down to what we think should be normal. I like the color-tune to set the mixture as it's very obvious when it's 'right' -at least at idle. The plugs tell a story too, but at this point your car has performance issues that tell a better story.

You may be forced to diagnose this issue when it is happening (hot). With the hood already off, it would be easy to jump out and pull the plug wires one at a time and see if any or all make a difference. If you suspect fuel, shut it off and look at both bowls. There is a clue hiding there somewhere because these cars should run longer than 10 minutes.

Sorry, wasn't clear on the electric pump/gas can idea....I meant to do this while the car is stationary in my garage.

It was about a 20 minute drive...10 out and 10 back.

Started to run rough all of a sudden driving at about 25 Mph. Stopped in a driveway to turn around to head home and car wouldn't idle unless I kept my foot on the gas. After that, the car ran poorly all the way home....had to use the emergency brake to keep the car stationary so I could keep my foot on the gas to keep it running. Died in my driveway...couldn't get it restarted to pull it into the garage. I bet if I go out there now, it will start right up though!

Cheers
