Fuel backup while filling

Yep, Mine does it. Totally restored, original tank with teflon inner coating. If you pump it in full bore when it backs up to the nossel and causes the nossel to shut off it is awful close to the top of the filler. If you notice, modern cars have a baffle at the top of the filler pipe and usually a flap there as well. The Healey doesn't, its going to spew out if pumping full bore. Answer, pump slower and keep an eye on the level as it comes up. I also keep a suppel rag in the trunk which I fold into a thick pad and hold at the lower half of the filler openning to catch anything when I have not been paying attention. Keeps the gas from running down the paint work. Dave.

The baffle and flap was introduced when cars began REQUIRING unleaded fuel. Their nozzle is a smaller diameter, and thusly, you couldn't inadvertantly put leaded gasoline (with its larger dispensing nozzle diameter) into a car equipped with a catalytic converter.

Passenger cars, but not small trucks, have been fitted with catalytic converters since 1975, but I don't know when it was required for trucks/Suburbans, or when the design of the filler neck and unleaded nozzles became a mandate.

Maybe this is more of a BJ8 phenomenon ( hiked up rear end), my BT7 will take on fuel as fast as I can pump it in. If you've got the problem take a 24" carpenter's level and rest it on the tank ( remove spare tire and mat) see if it helps when the filler tube is higher than the rear of the tank. Just a thought.

Good thought Brinker. Mine is a BJ7, but I never gave it a thought about the angle of the tank. Might have to do alittle investigating. Thanks, Dave.
