You are right, all I need it for is 5 mins to break it loose. Right now it's on the back burner as I have higher priority tasks to complete.... might get to it later.
The "starter" method scares me... with my luck the head would break off when I hit the starter so I'm not ready to try that method.
Make no mistake, it is coming out!

I would second Keith's idea, I've done something even simpler with just some angle iron, drill two holes that line up with two of the fan mounting holes and bolt it in to make a handle.

Connect a rope to one side of the car. Wrap the rope several times around the pulley so that it will tighten when you turn the bolt. Have someone hold the tag end of the rope to keep it tight while you undo the bolt. Reverse the direction of the rope to tighten the bolt.

Success in removing the crank bolt 
Here's the setup I finally decided to use.
Two 5/16"x24 cap screws
Two 1 1/2" pipe hangers.
Total cost= $3.00
Even if I had gotten an impact wrench to remove the bolt, I would still be faced with the same problem of keeping it from spinning when I re-torqued it.
Pipe hanger ends go around frame strut, flat ends screw into fan extension.
Cap screws allow the socket to fit over the crank bolt.
There you have it.

Ok, just to bring the point home after seeing all of these home made gizmos's that take all kinds of work/time.
A socket on a breaker bar laid against the floor...doesn't matter if left/right thread just lay it in the appropriate direction.
Bump the starter....no bang, no explosion, no moving breaker bar, just a loose nut.
Believe me it is a non event...I've done this on my TR3 and V8's with huge horsepower...works the same either way.
