Forum Status?

Basil

I know that without your site and all the information that it contains and the people who contribute here I don't think the restoration of my MG would have gone as smooth as it did.
You have a real gem on the net. I haven't been to another forum based site that is as friendly, flame free and has a high signal to noise ratio.

I wouldn't beat up too hard on the MG guys..lol. Seriously though, we've offered to turn this into a pay site before to help offset some of Basils costs. I'm a relative newbie here but I can see that this site has grown by leaps and bounds in the few short months I've owned an LBC. Maintaining something like this must be a great deal of trouble and I respect whatever Basil decides to do. It will be a shame but it seems he had something else in mind. I can't imagine what, as this is the best board I've ever been a part of. Anyway, over on the spridget side, I'm getting a list of screen names and email addresses together. Just making a simple excel spreadsheet so that we can keep in touch and still offer advice from time to time. Might be worth looking in to here as well. I thought about starting a yahoo group or something but I think it would fizzle after a board as nice as this. BTW, I didn't invade your board, I was invited...lol

Have any of you looked over at the MG forum. Not a mention of the forum possibly closing. The sky is falling and they are still talking about their cars. Go figure.

That comment was completely uncalled for. (and I'll completely ignore Walter's, I ignore most of his anyway ~grin~)

Perhaps we MG types are 'over there' doing what this site was intended, discussing cars, sharing experiences, advice, opinions, asking for help, offering help. And not wringing our hands and going 'woe is me' over something that MAY NOT happen.

There's 3 different threads (that I know of) running on this same topic. It's redundant to post in all of them, or add a new 'forum closing' thread to every section.

I would imagine every member on this board would step up and do anything to keep this place up and running. It might be more productive to try to figure out how to do that, or what we can do if, indeed, Basil does close BCF down.

In Bill's Defence I really think it was a joke, I definatly took it that way.

JB I thought you were dead or something. Someone mentioned that you had been online but only posted once today.

Wow.

After having joined the forum because my mom (Randi) thought "it was a pretty nifty thing", I have to say that I have worn my mouse button out hitting reload on my browser, waiting for new messages even as I wash clothes, play video games, etc etc.

I find this to honestly be the most entertaining website that I frequent daily. (And I'm a FARK.com addict, so thats saying something.)

Although my restoration has not exactly been going as planned, I've learned sooooo many different things about MG's, and british cars in general. And although I don't post nearly as much as maybe I should, I do indeed feel a kinship with this great group of folks.

I realize that Basil busts his hump for us pretty much 24/7/365.25, so let me thank him for all of his dedication, and congratulate him on being Mayor of such an amazing community, because in essence he really is. Thank you for contributing to the true spirit and passion that keeps these LBC's going.

I think I can speak for everyone when I say, if theres something we can do, let us know.

You've been here for us all this time.
Now let us return the favor.

Maybe what he needs is some police. I could be wrong, but I wonder if the missing forums is a result of some continual misuse that is getting tiresome.
Bas' I'm not a teccie, so I can't offer much help there.(I could give you a hand on the Jag) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I also would be willing to foot some dues, as others have said. And But I feel this problem is not entirely financial. This forum is growing at an astounding rate. If it stays open ( I hope it does) It's soon going to require several people sharing the duties of maintenance. It seems there is a wealth of help available here, Please consider our offers.
Whatever is decided, we back you 100%
Thanks for all you've done.

I have offered to act as a moderator......heaven knows there are enough of us willing to do that. I don't think that it's financial issues that are prompting this, even though it does cost him. I shall always be willing to chip in for that. Heck, this forum is part of my life now, I'd be rather lost without it. I joined the forum on my birthday almost four years ago, and have been a visitor every day since then. I am one of the very few who can say they have more posts than Jaybird! I did need a few years' head-start.

I think that it's a combination of things. We shall see what happens. The decision is his to make.

Basil, since joining this forum 3 years ago it has become kinda a second home for me. I have made many new friends here and have learned more than I ever dreamed possible about LBC's.

If you should decide to close the forum you must have very compelling reasons to do so, because you have worked hard to make this the best forum on the net. I will miss this place greatly if it closes but encourage you to do what is in your best interest. All my best to you for the joy you and my fellow forum mates have given me over the years.

Hey, who let JB in the Triumph section? Walt, I thought you were watching the door, did she bribe you to get in or something? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif Seriously though, this isn't the time to start slinging MG vs Triumph comments, especially ones with barbs. I'm sure the MG folks are equally aware of whats going on as we are, and are equally concerned. If they wish to express that concern through a thread in their own section they will, otherwise I'm sure you'll all agree that they would be welcome to join our discussion in this section.

I'm a relative newcomer here also, but I can say this board has the greatest group of people on it of any internet community I've been a part of. Initially I joined BCF to get help with questions about my TR6 and expand my knowledge of LBC's in general, but I ended up getting far more. In addition to the polite nature and mature attitudes around here there is a real sense of family among many of the members, and this is something that is both rare and precious in public forums, especially car oriented ones. I would also gladly step up with membership dues but I agree with some others that money is most likely not the issue here. If I had more technical knowledge I'd volunteer to help run this thing as a few others have, but I haven't even figured out how to publish my own web page yet. I was thinking that perhaps Bas could split the responsibility of running this place among himself and 2 or 3 knowledgable volunteers. He could sort of manage it but yet not have to dedicate 100% of his time to it.

I would really hate to see this place disappear, BCF has become an integral part of my day to day activities and would be sorely missed. If Bas does decide to close up shop I won't be happy but I'll understand, and thank him for almost a year of great conversation, help, and fun.

Thats because MG types have no class Bill. Now I have to go make a post about my TR.

Wow talk about hitting below the belt! Well, I guess when you drive a Midget, everything is below the belt.

Basil, next to that guy who wrote the article on how to repair and maintain a ZS water choke, you are the greatest guy ever. I am just a newbie, but in the short month or so I have been on the forum I have learned more than I did in 4 years of college. Of course, I did get a theatre degree... Nevertheless, the BCF has been a boone to all of mankind. Do what you have to take care of yourself and thanks for everything...

It would be hard to improve on the fine testimonials in the previous posts, so I shant try to do so, but I will say that I am in full agreement. This is one of the places that I visit daily and I would miss it very much indeed.
I hope that somehow it can carry on, even if stripped of some of the bells and whistles. I would be willing to contribute $$ as is done on the E-Z Boards.
God Bless, Basil. I hope eveything works out for you.
Best Regards as always

Bas,
I feel a part of a great family on the Forum. If you'll recall I'm out in flyover country where LBC's are a real part of history and alway's a conversation starter.
I've lurked on Classmates.com for a couple of years and am not at all interested in paying the 35$ a year to see who is looking for me. Who really cares, they can find me if they so desire.
The Forum on the other hand is a public service in my own opinion and I too would be more than willing to cough up some bucks to help in anyway possible.
How else will I be able to talk to Mad dog in Kansas or Alan Meyers in California, these guy's and others have taught me so very much and I am truly despondent about the possibility that we won't talk to each other again.
I don't want to sound like I'm whining but PLEASE try and find a way to get help or funds. This is a mainstay in life for me now and oh my I would so hate to see the demise.

I can understand the dilemma running such a large site that will more than likely continue to grow, making monitoring even tougher. In the “Who’s Online” section, the anonymous outnumber the members leading me to believe that we haven’t reached a saturation point.
I think the real tragedy would be the loss of information that is stored on this site. 78,000 posts for all the marques hold some unique information that will never be found in any book and may not be duplicated on any other forum. In a way, the forum IS the Knowledge Base. I'd hate to see it disappear.

I am a full time webdesigner and run my own personal enterprise class server. I run a couple Alpine, Tiger, british car club, and Mustangs site. I also run the largest bus conversion site on the net.

I would really like to take over BCF so that we don't loose this great resource. I'm a huge brit car guy ( I have five and soon six ) and would like to help out anyway I can.

I completely understand Basil's dilema on running the website. I am hoping we can as a group come up with an option to keep it open in some form if he decides to pack it in. I've had such a great time getting to know fellow LBC owners and sharing all the trials and tribulations of owning a Triumph (actually 2 now!). I'm in for a membership fee, or whatever you need to keep this forum open. I work from home and have a small business on the side building and repairing PC's, so please let me know what I can do to help. Just remember the famous quote from Animal House, "Did we just give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? heck no!!!"

Hi all,

As a moderator of another online group, I can really sympathize with Basil and appreciate all he must have to do to keep BCF running!

Speaking for myself, I don't regularly visit and follow non-Triumph forums, or Announcements (where most of us can't respond) or even Tools. The Triumph forum alone is enough to keep me quite busy reading and occasionally responding. I can't imagine trying to keep up with and monitor all the different forums found here!

I do hope Basil sees all these responses, in this and several different threads now appearing in different forums. For one, he should know how much he, his efforts and these forums are appreciated. And, there have been some good suggestions of possible solutions made.

There simply *must* be some things that can be done to help keep this excellent resource alive and well! For example, voluntary donations are regularly used to help keep similar resources available elswhere on the Internet. Something similar to a Public Broadcasting fund raising effort.

Or, some assistance in the day-to-day tasks, such as more assistant moderators, might lighten the load.

As a group, this is a vital and growing community of enthustiasts. Just tell us what's needed and we'll apply our collective minds, resources and talents to the task!

With much angst...
