Foolish Dale got lucky-this time

Mostly good news at least - I've had a mini-stroke due to a
congenital vascular defect in my brain. It happened apparently
3 months ago when I woke up wth a rather awful headache. The
day after some dental work. I ASSumed the two were related.
A wrench I ain't; a diagnostic doctor even less I ain't!

Got busy with Christmas, new years, friends visiting, taking
a cruise, charity work, etc. Bad headache constantly. Popping
Motrin like candy- 5000 mg a day.

Went and got a needless root canal just in case-nope
Took antibiotics for three weeks-nope
Got eye exam and new glasses- nope-still headache.

FINALLY after all this nonsense and expense, this 59 year old
fool went to the Doctor who immediately scheduled a high
priority MRI for first thing this morning. Within 4 fours hours
they had the images and called to have me pick them up and see
my doctor A.S.A.P. Scared me to death that things happened so
fast.

A mini-stroke with the headaches as aftershocks from the tiny
bit of internal bleeding. I will slowly recover and the
headaches will dull away.

Gentleman and friends: Don't be a stubborn ass like me. I was
darned lucky-this time. We are all getting up there in our average
member's age. If you have a pain in your head or chest-
go see your doctor immediately.

I was lucky, plain and simple.

best regards

Jeeeze Dale, I don't know what to say. Follow the Docs instructions, and behave. I hope it heals up quick. I think perhaps you should go fishin' or TR6'n and just do the lo stress thing. Best of luck with that.

Gosh, Dale, that's a sobering story and I'm really glad you're going to be okay.

I agree, the "he-man" I don't need no stinkin' doctor business is for fools! I had a similar scenario a few years ago: ignored doc's advice and it cost me down the road.

We pay physicans all that money, might as well take their advice!

Take care, man!

Dale, you have experienced the "Macho Male Denial Syndrome" just like I did with chest pains that went on for 30-45 minutes before calling 911. A stay in the hospital and couple of stents later, things are better.

Men are tough but all to often they are stupid in not seeking help when needed.

Glad to see you are alright and getting the treatment you need.

A word to young guys who are over weight with high cholesterol, change your diet and exercise now, or if lucky you will do it under the supervision of a cardiologist later. Not to mention supporting the pharmaceutical industries bottom line.

Dale,
Sometimes we need to do something dumb to get smart. I self medicated indigestion and back pain years ago with antacids, milk, and Excedrin, till I passed out from blood loss due to a bleeding ulcer. It was all that was needed to learn that customer complaints were not all of my doing. Once I learned to accept that and relax my health improved too.

Take care and be well. Now I need to fly to Ft Lauderdale and relax with a week on Holland America's Zuiderdam...

Dale, take it easy buddy and I will catch up to you the next time I am in PR

Dale:

Dang... I'm glad you're ok. I hate to hear about this stuff, especially when it just "pops up" like that! Take it easy!

Dale,
We leave Ft. Lauderdale and visit Grand Turk, Tortola, St. Thomas, and Half Moon Cay, Bahamas on this jaunt. And NO SNOW or Ice (except in beverages).

Dave:

I'm curious about the Grand Turk leg of your trip. I assume that's on a big cruise ship... are they actually taking the ship to the island, or what?

I mapped Grand Turk about 10 years ago and when I was there it was nearly deserted. They had a dive business going for people that flew in just to go diving, but when I was there we were two of five people in the only hotel on the island.

Dale - I'm beginning to learn to listen to my body...we're not getting any younger!

Glad you're hanging in!!

Heck, I was just notified that my sister-in-law 7 years younger than me passed away last night (actually, I just got around to listening to 26 messages on my phone)

Glad to hear it is working out Dale! Please take care of yourself! Who would give us tropical updates??

Dale;

I'm very glad this is not worse!
Man you scared me.

I'm not even going to tell the girls, or they'll be on a flight to see you, and kick your butt (that's what happens to me).

Do some slow cruisin' and spendin' time that Wendy.

aerog,
I believe that might be an island where we shuttle via the lifeboats to the island rather than docking the cruise ship. Our excursion that day is called a 4x4 Safari and is described on the web site as:

" Experience the natural history and cultural heritage of Grand Turk in a safari-themed 4x4 vehicle. Learn about Grand Turk's rich history and culture, as it was reputed to be the place where Christopher Columbus made his first landfall in the West Indies. Drive to Governor's Beach and past the Freighters Dock cargo port before heading into the nation's capital city, Cockburn Town. Travel through the town along historic Pond Street, enjoying the views of the ruins of the old salina. Hear how salt was derived through natural process of "solarization" and observe the windmills that were used to funnel natural sea water from one salina to another. Near the town center, your guide will escort you on a 15-minute leisurely walk down quaint Front Street lined with turn of the century Bermuda-style architecture. Next you will travel off the beaten path to North Wells in search of a glimpse of the famous, endangered pink flamingos that can be seen foraging through the silty bottom of the salina ponds in search of brine shrimp and other crustaceans. Enter North Wells by way of a narrow sand track where tour buses dare not venture on your way around the island, past the North Creek (a ships' haven during a hurricane) and the St. Thomas Anglican Church--the first church built on Grand Turk. On the Southeastern side of the island take in the view of Gibbs Cay before returning to the ship. "

I can tell you more about this upon our return home if you are interested.

Nah.. that'll do it. Don't want to steal the thread too much from Dale - but they left out half the island was an airbase (can't remember if it was Navy or USAF) and that's where they took John Glenn after his first ride...and that's where the prison is (or was) for the Turks Islands... the architecture and some of the old buildings of the East India Co. were interesting to see though.

Glad to see someone is taking trips there, it's a nice quiet place to relax.

tinster, wow you a lucky "sunminagung! " glad to hear youll be o.k., listen to your doctor or ill come down do a navy seal deal and steal your prop! :savewave:
