Florida grapefruit!

When we came to Florida there were citrus groves aplenty. Now they're all apartment complexes. Hard to find a grapefruit outside a grocery store.

I remember when we would travel to Florida, we had our favorite fruit stands to stop at, one of the best was an orange grove packing house that sold to the general public. Between our two boys and us we would kill a whole bag before we got home. Loved those Indian River Oranges! :encouragement:

Speaking of orange groves, who can reveal what these California orange and walnut groves became?

Disneyland! And here's the swampland of Disneyworld:

BTW, here's one of my favorite photos of a service station right outside the Disneyland gate:

I can see why that's a favorite picture - that's a lovely red T-bird! :angel2:

Got it!

Disneyland on opening day: July 17, 1955:

I didn't get there until a week later. Just like opening day (a private invitation only day), the place was *jammed*.

Even on July 17, things were breaking down, the water fountains didn't all work, and Walt was not a happy camper.

Things got better.

OK - I'm one of the Ancients!

This was my absolute favorite ride at Disneyland: Autopia!

If I recall, there was also a "mini-autopia" for kids too short to ride in the "big" cars.

I always hated the white because to my taste it was like eating a giant lemon. I've never really cared for grapefruit or the juice. As I kid I remember having to line up for the dreaded castor oil followed by a paper cup of grapefruit juice.

I grew up eating Grapefruit, but with sugar sprinkled on it.

a shot of castor oil with a grapefruit chaser?.......might catch on at a fern bar today.

we always sprinkled salt on our ruby red grapefruit from the South Tx valley.
my dad even put salt on watermelon for some reason.

I may have asked before, but where in the Valley? My mom lived in Mercedes as a kid, and spent much of her later years in Weslaco.

And pink grapefruit "straight up", naturally from the Valley, is my choice.

We never actually lived that far south, but
After II Dad went to TA&M on the GI Bill, then joined the Army Corp of Engineers & was in for 16 more years. During that time they/we (I came along in 56) bounced up & down the Tx coast on water treatment engineering projects. I was born in Victoria, we lived in Beeville, Corpus, San Antone, Houston, Galveston as far west as Del Rio & El Paso. Mom finally put her foot down & we moved to Dallas & settled down. ( Dad loved the COE, he was a civil engineer at a time when they were in high demand)

apologise for personal info. dump! But once it's written....

that front autopia racer has a slight resemblance to Judow's "Onslow A Jaguar"

We had white grapefruit all the time. Had to scoop it out of it's little V sleeves and top with lots of sugar. I worked retail groceries and this went out when people found the red and pink were sweeter and did not have to use sugar. Therefore, due to demand less white is produced. Seems fruit trees have to be replaced on a regular basis and during this rotation the new sweeter variations are planted.

Mom and my sisters and I moved to Corpus from Shreveport in '60; I moved back to S'port in '64 to live with Dad. Spent lots of time fishing from the T-heads and out near the Oso with my buddy. Still have a sister down there; need to get back down there for a visit.
