Float bowl fuel height BJ8

I've been reading up on how to tune the carbs. Different carbs have different hinged lever settings. If the settings are off, the floats will be off.

What effect does having the fuel at different levels in the float bowl affect the running/performance?

For the HD8 carbs I believe the hinged levers should be adjusted to 7/16".

But if the levers are set wrong, then the floats will be off. How would the following affect the car.

1. different float heights between the two bowls.
2. same height in both bowls, but floats rest at half way instead of near the top (where it should be if correctly set).

There are no stupid questions, right?

Cheers,
Curious George

7/16" is correct for HD8 Carbs

It affects the level of the fuel in the well (jet) and to a certain degree, you compensate for that while you adjust the mixture (by raising/lowering the jet).

It gets more complecated than that (especially with Webers, and the transition from the idle circuit to the main circuit) but if the level in an SU float bowl is "close enough" to the recommended level, they can be tuned.

Roger, check out the Moss tech videos. They have one on setting the floats. (Find it on there web-sight along with 104 other great videos). They used a drill bit and explained what to look for and what position the float should be in and where exactly to put the drill bit.

As I recall, the float lever may need tweaking a bit depending upon whether or not you used the original needle & seats or the Grose seats.
