First Real Jaguar Day...

The reason the MAF sensor's top is off is that someone was trying to adjust the flap and movement of the spring. Should have been black siliconed on. There is a Tech bulletin on a resistor that can be put in the harness to effect cold start conditions. We did some of them back when I worked for a Jag shop. Good idea to salvage some stuff and see what happens. Tony, sorry I forgot about the ground. Been a while and this forgetting thing keeps on a coming. There is so much I have done to the Jags, just have a bubble now and then.

Man, am I learning - this is my 2nd Jag & I don't know ANYTHING!!

I'm taking everything I can off the car - friend of mine who's into American street rods wants the rear end...

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:]But: how do you know that the AFM needs replacing?[/QUOTE]
I really don't....the top being unsealed bothers me & after a major tuneup & about 300 miles, it occassionally skips a beat or "speeds up" slightly....those could be symptoms of injectors still not completely cleaned (the car sat for some time before I got it)...I'm adding Lucas for gas to the tanks & using 93-octane for a few tanks to clean things up.

just seal it back.

the engine "speeding up" the revs up and down is the classic symptom of a sticking/dirty Auxiliary Air Valve, not the AFM.

Another reason is not-seated or cracked "convolute" hoses, the large diameter hoses from the AFM back to the 90 degree aluminum elbow at the intake butterfly. Make sure the hose sections are well seated and not cracked. It's the simple silly stuff that causes the symptoms.

Please note I am not a technician, my experience comes from 17 years of trial-and-error troubleshooting my 1984 XJ-6 and learning from others. I guess that makes me a "Taenician", "trial and error nician".
