that is the time that my MG Midget has not seen sunlight, and that is the the time that she has finally been released and put on a trailer. and as we speak she is on her way to California. I cannot possibly convey my excitement, that my dream car is on its way, and that, m y roject can continue to get done/ started on. I wil get some more pics of her all around once the car gets here, and I will post any for sale items here first, before I ebay them, so keep an eye on this forum, and let me know if you need anything.

last word is I'll be getting "her" on wedsday afternoon. also, this is just the luck. My father and brother were the ones who put the car on the trailer, and my wifes cousin is dragging this thing across the country. well, I specifically requested that they cover the car in a tarp, not just to keep it from getting rained on, but more of an out of sight out of mind thing. I didn't people between here and there getting any ideas. oh yeah not 24 hours outside of the comfy dry storage unit, and she got rained on, which I guess helps with making the car look good from a distance, but the top does have a leak and I wanted to prevent that. guess you just can't get people to do what you need regardless of what you ask of them. anyway, I'll have some pics on here by friday. and in the near future I will be selling parts off the car, so if I have any requests for parts let me know. I don't know what I'm keeping, but I do know I'm keeping the wiper motor, seats, dash, bumpers, body, windshield frame, some things I know I will be getting rid of,guages (high demand all work) all switches, engine, transmission, drive shaft, rear axle, brakes, wiring harness, may keep the radiator, but that will prolly go also. if you live close to SoCal and are willing to drive you will save a grip on shipping, but I won't rake anyone over the coals. this project is going to cost me a ton but anything I can get for these parts will help in the end I'm hoping I can make enough off the parts to get the body media blasted, but we'll see
 
well, she is here now. I got the car last night, but it was dark so I didn't do anything to the car. first thing this morning me and a couple other guys beasted it off the trailer, cause the rear right tire is complete shot, won't hold any air. plus it we were pushing it slightly up hill, and the rear drums are draging a little, but once we got her goin it wasn't bad. due to the rear right being a little low, the bottom of the car near the tire "high centered" for a touch, but its all gonna get redone anyway, so it was no sweat off my back but anyway, as I was clearing out the storage unit and I had other stuff in the car, I spent the brunt of today emptying all the junk from my pas out of the car and sorting through that mess but once I got that done, I took a scrub brush and some soap to her and got here about 90% clean for the pics that follow.









 
I'm confused...you wanted a parts car moved in an enclosed trailer because you were afraid of it getting wet?
 
no I didn't need it moved in an enclosed trailer, I wasn't worried about the car getting wet, but the interior of the car was full of stuff, and the top leaks, so I wanted it covered. plus, every single person who has seen this car has said they want it, and while that is cool and all when a family member is joking about it, but what if somewhere between Arkansas and California, some random guy decided that they were gonna take it? that is the primary reason I wanted it covered, out of sight out of mind. but she only got a little bit of rain, and she got here in one piece. and hopefull I can get started right away. on a side note, I realized I had a ton of really good comic books from the early 90's like when Image Comics got started, so I'm gonna sart selling those on e-bay so I can hopefully use that money to get started on this car.
 
IIRC you are going to customize the car with an engine swap and a host of other mods?
Many have started down that road only to abandon such projects. Be sure that you have a clear map of your plan and that you stay with it. Work on the car every day (even if it is something little) so that it doesn't become an abandoned project. Good luck and keep us posted.

BTW, it is not too late just to keep it stack and enjoy it. They are fun, and great conversation pieces just the wat they are.
 
well, I'm parting the car out with parts that are good. to the benefit of you guys here if there is anything you may need let me know, when I get to it I will see about getting it ready. I need to sell parts off the car to afford the restoration project. I'm not really going to just part out the car and leave it hanging. I'll start with the actuall tear down in a couple of weeks, things are kinda crazy right now, and I gotta get the car on some tires that will hold more air. so if any of you who are doing a "purist" restoration and want original parts I will have a lot available. I'm not trying to advertise a sale here, just giving all of you first dibs. I will post updates here and I'm sure I will have plenty of questions.

as far as what I plan on doing to the car is putting a far more reliable engine preferably from a BMW into the car. most of the drivetrain and suspension components will be from a BMW. I will also be putting in better carpet that isn't broken down into so many segments, and putting in a wood top dash, lots of powdercoating. the final body color will be an ivory pearl and the interior will be black with white trim. the top will be a canvas one with a hotrod style small glass window. there will be a roll bar and lots of electrical goodies. now that I have officially declared myself insane/ heretic, I want to share the progress with all of you, its a task that I haven't seen done before, with the exception of the crazy V8 mods, I have acess to lots of tools, and people are already lining up to help, so I hope that just that alone may take a year off the project, I give myself 5 to go, and I've stuck with this car for the last 9 years and haven't even started yet, so my resolve is there. hope that helps explain some of my intent

Why not just sell the Midget & buy a BMW? Don't mean to offend, just wondering?
 
Ditto. And no offense, but from personal experience, BMW's are a huge PITA concerning parts costs, sourcing, etc, etc. Largely, reliability of the older ones (80's) is good, can't vouch for the 90's and newer, but I hear they're not getting any better. Regardless, they're expensive!

540td, eh? I'll bet that one was an amazing improvement over the 524td and the 324td! The euro 323i is the car to have among E30's, they say (aside from a 1st generation M3 of course). Wouldn't mind owning one of them, but they're still a BMW, and those are worse than my trusty 325e for parts/expense.

ooops, my old age is showing - 524td is what we owned - had to ask my wife, its principal driver back in the 80's....she went back to Mercedes after that BMW!

Haha! Yeah, with a 2.4L Turbo Diesel in a 5 series, it should have been slow as molasses. Can't say the mercedes is better, though. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Same engine was in a Lincoln...the BMW dealer told me to go there to buy parts as they were about 1/2 the price...when I took them out of the Lincoln box, there was a BMW box inside...

...didn't have alot of pickup but would run down interstate at 85 all day long with no effort!

She went into a 190E from the 524td & loved it until a drunk totalled it..now she's in a C280...me, I'm still running my old '82 380SL - I love that car!

Yeah, that's how my 325e is, it gets fabulous gas mileage on the highway, even with an automatic transmission, but it's not too quick in a straight line. It did do quite well in my school's autocrosses, though. If I tried to compete against the Cooper S's in SCCA G Stock, though, It'd be a joke. They've got a weight advantage, tire advantage, and about 45 more horsepower. It's a joke in general.
