TR2/3/3A Finally found and fitted paper carb air filters on my TR3

Back to the topic of the Mr. Gasket filter assemblies: My local O'Reillys doesn't stock that size, and the kid behind the counter didn't know if they could order them or how long it would take or what the price would be. But judging by their price on other Mr. Gasket assemblies, the price on Amazon is better anyway.

Does anyone know if the stock TR6 filter elements will fit the modified Mr. Gasket assembly?

Randall, when I tried the TR6 elements the outside diameter as well as the thickness was too big to fit a TR3. I can't remember the exact size but I believe the TR6 filters were something like 7-1/4 OD and 2-1/4 thick. Even if I lowered the element and offset them. the TR6 elements rubbed the fender as well as the top appeared to touch the hood. The Mr Gasket assemblies I used have a smaller diameter (6-1/2) AND they are only 1-1/2 thick and the smaller thickness made a hugh difference in not hitting the fender.

Bob

Fwiw: I replaced the black domed "rock catchers" with these K&N air filters #56-9327
I purchased from Amazon.
they were about $70. Bucks each, but reusable. they offer a lot of air intake surface area.
Fit well, and the conical shape clears everything important on a 3.

Also FWIW, all of the independent tests that I've seen say that the K&N "filter charger" does not clean the air as well as a good old paper element. For example https://www.billswebspace.com/AirFilterTest.htm

And around here, we get a lot of very fine, very abrasive dust in the air, especially when the Santa Ana winds are blowing.

wow! Thanks for sharing that. I always thought K&N was the best.
i'm going to send the KN R&d folks that link and get their comments.
i also use their cold air intake on my truck. I'm looking for longevity, not marketing spin.

I agree that the web sites are misleading. I had the O'Reilly's guy (who was VERY helpful) order the 1486 and the 1485. I was really surprised when I opened the box for the 1486 and found that it was 1-1/2 thick. I tied it on my car and it worked great so I went back and had him order the second 1486 and it also was 1-1/2 thick. It could possibly be a packaging error at the factory but the 1-1/2 inch ones worked great for me. I went to the local O'Reilly's because I had seen the discrepancies on the different web sites and I wanted to see what I was getting. This O'Reilly's was very helpful and let me try several filters and return the ones that did not fit. I had to pay for them but got full refund when returned.

FWIW, I replaced my "rock catchers" many years ago with the K&N 56-1400; they're the shape of large tuna cans. The front just barely kisses the inner fender well; otherwise they fit the SUs perfectly. I like Guy's tapered filters better, but I don't think they were available at the time.

The 1400s are even more expensive than the 9327s, though ISTR I paid half the current rate...

Must be hot at Triumphest!
