Fender Mirrors

I do sympathize with the initial trepadation over drilling holes. But once you drill the first one, you get over it. My Tiger had been modified by the PO to remove the stainless trim that runs along the entire side, like the trim on an MGB/C, but thinner. Well, I had to drill a whole bunch of holes. After I made sure I measured carefully and marked my holes, I just got to work!

Go for it!

I have lucas fender mirrors on the front of my MGA, in line with the center of the front hub

CAUTION.. I HATE THEM!!!

Your always knocking them out of adjustment, (its a joke, that after I get in the car, my wife joins me, after she has adjusted the mirrors!) anytime you work within the engine compartment, they are in the way, to the point that I have accidently knocked them in to the suface of the fender, resulting in a gash in the paint!!! they are truly a nusiance..

When I get around to doing the body over, the first thing I wat to do is fill the holes and get rid of them..

Years, and years ago, I did bullet mirrors on my MGA ( the smaller ones)

the large ones are way too horsey..I did not want them way out on the fender, so working with my then girlfreind, Now wife.

I sighed them so the were just seen in the far left of the windscreen wipper area about a foot and half in front of the windshield...

yes, I still had to move my eyes evers so slightly, to pick up the image...

but they landed up working real fine, and never had an issue about knocking them while working on the engine...

I still have not decided on my present configurattion of what kind of mirrors I will replace those awful fender mirrors with..

I did not want

im not afraid to drill the holes in the car. what im afraid of is screwing them up and the mirror locations not matching or being symmetrical.

i think im going to go with the bullet type of mirror so i will have to drill my own holes to mount them

i think ill photoshop some pictures of Nigel with the mirrors just to see how it looks

More important than how they look is how they work when you are driving. You can have someone hold them in place or use 'earthquake putty' while you sit in the car and check the view of the mirrors. I also like mirrors that are easy to adjust from the car so my TEX bullet mirrors will be much closer to the door than the last pair. The last ones were Lucas mirrors mounted over the front wheel area. They were always getting knocked out of alignment and I found them not too useful because with distance the amount visible in the mirror is very small.

It's amazing the difference in experiences people have with fender mirrors. I love mine. Other people despise them. I guess to each his own.

I will say that my experience is this:
MGB: Single fender mirror (right side). The original had no glass so I replaced it with a Lucas-style convex. Don't know if the original would have been flat or convex. Visibility with this mirror is superb. It has gotten knocked out of adjustment exactly once in 10 years.

TD: Dual fender mirrors (i.e. both sides). They're a little low -- the right one would be a lot more useful if it stood about an inch higher. Still not too bad though -- it still gives me a view of what's in that blind spot over there. The car came with genuine Lucas flat mirrors. I've since replaced them with repro convex. They were ok flat, but the convex mirror is better. They tend to get knocked out more frequently than the B's mirror -- not sure why. I think it helps to keep the adjustments tight to prevent them from moving with small bumps.

If I was adding mirrors to a car that did not have them, it would be fender mirrors, no question. I don't think I'd remove door mirrors if the car already had them, though.

BTW, you may not be getting the full benefit from whatever style mirror you have. Here's how to adjust them properly:

HTH!

Interesting how they claim to have invented the proper way to adjust mirrors as if no one else has figured that out in 100+ years of automobiles and motor sport. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rolleyes.gif They do show the proper way to do it though.

Tony, I recieved my fender mirrors today.
They look really sweet, and are much nicer than I anticipated. I Love the look.
Can't wait to put them on for good. I first have to sand and buff my freshly painted car, then I will put them on. I pre-drilled the holes prior to the paint, so I was thinking ahead. Can't wait...
Anyways, thanks for the mirrors, and as always, great job with this website.
