Exhaust Tailpipe Length

Hi all
Just fitted a new tailpipe to my BT7 but it seems too long. Before I cut something from the end Is there a "correct" length relative to the bumper/over rider?

From my experience, the end of the pipe should extend at least an inch--you remember inches, right :friendly_wink:?--beyond the bumper/overrider above it. If not, you'll get a) residue (soot) on the bumper/overrider and b) possible fumes in the cockpit due to some aerodynamics causing the gasses to 'curl' towards the front of the car.

Failure to allow at least 2 Inches past the Bumper will cause the chrome to turn BLUE >Fail

Yes, we do still understand inches over here but many thanks for the conversion!
Well, I guess the tailpipe is OK after all. It measures 2.5inches beyond the bumper and 1 inch beyond the over rider. Just looks much longer than the old one.

The UK has gone largely metric, though not entirely: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metrication_in_the_United_Kingdom

Even Edd China says metric stuff.

Darn it

When I bought my stainless steel set up some years ago now, I cut back my tail pipes to about the bumper line as was the one that it replaced, I also cut them on the splay to prevent rain entering - that was the thinking at the time! Ah well must hunt around for a nice slip over chrome extension.:smile-new:

Go to the plumbing department and look for chrome plated brass pipe used in sink drains. I found some that were a perfect slide on fit, and easily cut. They have been on for over ten years. High temp silicone seal, if needed.

Steve , One thing to check is your vehicle regulations. In south Australia the exhaust tail pipe cannot protrude past the rear extremity of the vehicle, we are over regulated compared to the USA and I hope you aren't as well, but it may pay to check. saltiga
