Engine Noise - Video 1 & Video 2 added

Re: Engine Noise - Video

Set your exhaust a bit looser.........

And git yourself a thick aluminum valve cover /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Engine Noise - Video

Don't use any valve lash no place but where they specified to belong--Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

Re: Engine Noise - Video

From 1 - 8 which is intake & which is exhaust?

Re: Engine Noise - Video

Just look at where the intake manifold goes in and where the bad air comes out.

Never heard of anyone burning an intake valve.

Looks like 1,8,4 & 5 are exhaust.

Re: Engine Noise - Video

Well then I guess I have done just that. If you look a few posts ago you can see that I have adjusted 2,3,6&7 down to .010" Those were the noisy ones which are the intake.

Re: Engine Noise - Video

Interesting coincidence....

Everything OK now?

Re: Engine Noise - Video

So, Vping with all this adjusting going on, is it still noisy?

Re: Engine Noise - Video

3 & 6 have a little tick. I can hear it hood up & across the garage. When I take it out for a drive, I can hear it but it is not like it was before which I described sounded like a deisel.

If the consensus is to leave that tick alone, I will. They are both intake and if there is no harm in the intake valves being a bit tighter than exhaust and a little noisy, fine.

My original fear was that something major was wrong and that the engine might get destroyed. I think it was a matter of understanding the sounds of an MG engine and understanding the tweakability of it. Over time I'm sure I'll get more intimate with the sounds these buggers make.

Re: Engine Noise - Video

On the intakes you could come down another thousand or so, but no more.

I think you just have old worn drive train ie rockers and push rods prob.

See this for fun.

Re: Engine Noise - Video

Go to a local MG club meeting and listen to all the other cars. That will give you an idea of how your should sound. Of course they all do sound different, but so long as yours sounds similar then you will be able to relax about it. Also, if the valves all sound about the same then you're most likely fine. If one or two are louder or less noisy than the rest, something may be amiss!

Re: Engine Noise - Video

Good idea to go listen to others. In fact a great idea.

Only 3 & 6 are a bit louder. I took them down to .009" and it was quiet but the consensus was that this might be too small. I will post another video for all to hear.

I will listen to other cars at my next club meeting.

Re: Engine Noise - Video

Was that 9 with a feeler gage or a wire gage?

Re: Engine Noise - Video

Feeler which is why it might not be too bad.

Re: Engine Noise - Video

Yep, that's what I was thinking. Why not have a few very small drill bits miked at your friendly machine shop so you will have some ready to go. Very small ones now look at the gages.

Small number drills are available in the following sizes:
#80 - .0135"
#79 - .0149"
#78 - 016"
#77 - .018"

They are about 3/4" long & need to be held in a pin vise. You can only use the shank part which is about 3/8" long. In reality, you would be better off with narrow flat blade feeler gauges.

Re: Engine Noise - Video

I have all those bita but did not get a chance to mic them yet. Thanks for posting the numbers as it saves me a few steps. Those are not small enogugh. I think I have small but will have to check tonight. Also have a small kit of reamers for cleaning my torch & Mig nozzle tips. wonder wha they mic to?

Re: Engine Noise - Video

Dave, we are trying to determine if his pushrods and or rockers are worn as they do. We don't want to replace all untill we figure out for sure what's bad and how bad.

I know cheep fix for new rocker assy and pushrods but if not needed no sence of spending the bucks.

Re: Engine Noise - Video

I drove her hard last night & took it to work this morning. Now she like to make noise when she is cold but when nice & toasty runs great other than a tap here & there. I think this is part of the sounds that these buggers make & will have to live with it until I decide to do a full rebuild one day. I can at least drive it knowing it will not (might not) self destruct.

Re: Engine Noise - Video

Outstanding, have someone at club nite listen to it as suggested before to give you an idea of what is normal.
