Engine Noise - Video 1 & Video 2 added

Re: Engine Noise - Video

I can't hear the sound bit but just intermittantly as I have dial up and it is slow and has to reload very often. It sounds to like it might be a noisy alternator. The rattle has too high a frequency to be a rocker arm to me. But I can only about 3 seconds of sound every 15 or 20 seconds. You can take the fan belt off and run it for a brief few seconds and see if the sound is still there.

Re: Engine Noise - Video

Boy, old ears. I surely can't hear that frequency.

Re: Engine Noise - Video

Great tip!!! I stuck a .010" flat feeler gauge while running and the noise has subsided. I just need to readjust them all until quiet.

OUCH!! I tried to increase the idle while move the dizzy cause it is idling low while the valve cover is off and I got the shock of my life. Should this happen?

Re: Engine Noise - Video

Yeah I know. It's the small one coming out of the side of the cap. I have not replaced that one yet.

Re: Engine Noise - Video

Would you believe that I need to set my valves hot:

#1 = .012"
#2 = .010"
#3 = .010"
#4 = .012"
#5 = .012"
#6 = .010"
#7 = .010"
#8 = .012"

My engine is nice & quiet now.

(edited to show actual)

Re: Engine Noise - Video

No, I wouldn't believe that. How did you measure them? That's way too small a gap! Remember, the valves are supposed to make SOME noise.

Re: Engine Noise - Video

Haha, adjust them per spec. hot. Should be fine at that point. With the cover off should chatter happly.

Oh yea use a wire gage.

You are now a member of the brother hood. 40K volts club.

Re: Engine Noise - Video

By inserting the flat feeler gauge into them while running.

I know they should make some noise but based on the video, the noise is really loud. I reset 4 of them down to .010" and cut down most of the noise. Then I went back & set 3 & 6 at .009"

I am new to this so I have to listen to what experienced MG guys have to say but how bad is it if they are too small? I can post an additional video of noise and while inserting the feeler gauge.

What is wearing for the valves to be making this noise?

Re: Engine Noise - Video

Valves wear the seats and the valve. rockers wear both sides. Pushrods wear both ends and lifters and cam wear. Boy, lot of wearing going on.

Did you set them with a wire gage, like a spark plug gage. Only way to get em accurate unless pushrods and rockers are new. Set to spec and you are golden.

Re: Engine Noise - Video

Loose valves = noisy, but OK. Tight valves = quiet, but much more likely to burn valves. The valves are "cooled" by resting on the seat. Too tight a clearance means not enough time cooling. I would look hard for broken valve springs, or worn rockers and shaft. The next time you have the shaft off, check the bottom of the shaft for wear under each rocker. What happens is this. As the pushrod rises, and closes the clearance at the valve, if the rocker /shaft interface is excessively worn, there is a secondary "tap" as the rocker is raised up to contact the shaft. This occurs pretty much simultaneously as the valve clearance closes, so there is not a second tap, just louder than it normally would be at any given clearance.

Re: Engine Noise - Video

After reading this thread I would like to add a wire feeler gauge to the t box and so far the best I've found on the web only go down to .015". Anyone have a source for a set that will work for valves?

When it comes to getting zapped by ignitions I was nailed by my trucks ignition putting a wire back on. Nice bright blue spark reached out about a 1" and a half from the distributor into my hand. Very loud expletive let out as I left the floor followed by loss of feeling for a bit in the offending hand. Never doing that again.

Re: Engine Noise - Video

Lots of small drill bits around.

Re: Engine Noise - Video

Just remember that valves that are set too close run very quiet but can burn valves. From my VW experience, I would rather hear a little clatter than replace valves and seats. So the loose side of spec is where I usualy go and I have been driving mine for 25 years.

Re: Engine Noise - Video

You can get feeler gauges sets that go down to .0015", I bought my last set at O'Rieley Auto parts.

I adjusted the .009" back to .010" and the noise is the same. Is .010" the smallest I should go with the flat gage or is the consensus that .010" is too small. To the best of my knowledge all components are still orignal and probably have some wear. I'll try the wire gage idea and see what happens.

I love out of the box thinking!! Great tip Jack!

Re: Engine Noise - Video

.015 cold?

Rick

Re: Engine Noise - Video

Yes. .015" cold, .012" hot but I took a few down fto .010" hot.
