Is it possible to change the engine mounts with the engine in the car r do you have to fit them before you lower the engine into psition?

The TR3B I am working needs the engine munts replaced. I can not get the starting handle to engage and the owner said that he use to use the starting handle. If I can not get the mounts out I may just add some of the spacers. There are no spacers at the moment and a previous mechanic may have left them out.

You should be able to do it by either lifting the engine slightly with a chain at the top, or use a large board under the oil pan to jack from under. Just use caution, as if you tilt it up too far it will bend the throttle torque rod behind the head.

Thank you John.

I thought I had seen a post about having to fit them first before installing the engine.

You should be able to lift the engine a bit from the top with a chain, or using a large board under the oil pan and jack from under...enough to slide the mounts out and back in. Just be careful not to lift so high as to bend the throttle torque tube behind the head.

It's easier with the engine out, but you should be able to lift enough to slide the mount stud past the engine front plate. A little side movement will help get one side at a time.

I just did mine and the transmission mount with the engine in the car. Board and jack under the oil pan. The studs were a bit longer on the TRF mounts, but fit once cut to the length of the old mounts. They’re angled, so I had to attach the mounts loosely to the engine first. I loosened all mounts, and then did one at a time. Mainly it was a fine dexterity exercise, with little slippery wrenches and trying to start nuts with one finger, but my hands are large. It took most of a day, mostly trying to get nuts started in awkward spots.

Thank you Steve and John for the info.

As soon as they get here I will get on it. Will be removing the radiator hoses as I have noticed they are starting to crack. That should make lifting the engine a bit easier.

I think that when I posted the thread there was an issue. It said "Oops you need a header" so I added one. The original one must have posted.

With the old format, we were able to merge threads in cases like this. I think Boss-man is working on a fix.

Got the old ones out and new ones installed adding 2 spacers on both sides to align the crank dog with the hole in the radiator. The drivers side came out easily but the passengers side took a bit of pushing and shoving of the engine to get enough rom to get the bolt out.
