Engine Color

Tony,

So true... even my wife looks better, talks nicer, and treats me better.... and that's saying alot... :smirk:

Actually the MGC engine looks significantly different from the Healey engine - just look at the valve covers.

The Healey has the usual generic BMC coffin shaped cover held on by two nuts at the top. The MGC has a formed cover held on by many screws around the periphery.

The MGC engine was redesigned but was an update of the old C series engine. They used late style horizontal split con rods and flat sided crankshaft (as did later MGBs), added two main bearings and used smaller carbs - 1 3/4" instead of 2". The result was only slightly lighter (not as much as they had hoped) and similar power.

The idiots that reviewed them wondered why the new engine had 5 BHP less than the last Healey 3000, but none of them twigged to the fact that using 1 3/4" instead of 2" carbs might have had something to do with that (the pic of my MGC above has a non-stock triple HS6 manifold).

Good reliable power units, but need some modifying to get the best out of them (the same is true of the Healey or MGB).

That isn't a good comparison at all! Alloy valve coner, triple carbs and other mods on the MGC. I don't mean to say that the engine bay of the two cars look the same, but to someone who didn't know the difference, looking at the basic black and head setup might be confusing. Both big straight 6 C-series engines, just with different bits hanging off.

This might be a more accurate comparison...

That Pale Primrose must be a home market MGC, Steve..maybe a 1968? Right hand drive based on the accelerator cable..odd brake master cylinder-most remote that I've seen have been on the firewall; I'm not sure what the strap acros the valve cover is for.....nice shot, though!

I just got my carbs back for both the '68C and the '69C from Jimmy Hilton in Texas; each also now has a distributor from Jeff Schlemmer as well. Hope to be back on the road soon as I took the Nissan 300ZX to MG2008. Fun drive, but just not the same.
