EGR Valve questions

Hello everyone!
New guy here with a couple of questions about my 1979 triumph Spitfire 1500 California model. First, on the EGR valve there is a rubber tube extending from the valve to the carb (vacuum line?) the tube has inside of it a little metal ball locked into place-doesn't let air/gases go in or out-is it supposed to be like that? what's it's function if it just blocks everthing?
Second question. Again, from the EGR valve there is a metal tube making a quick u-turn into the intake manifold-this tube is also blocked! are they really supposed to be that way? or was it the PO's idea of bypassing the anti-smog yet fool the DMV? and replies would be appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum!
Both of those lines should be open for the EGR system to function. The small one is the vacuum source that operates the valve, and the larger is the line that ports the exhaust back to the intake manifold for re-cycling.
If the car is running OK without them, and you don't have to worry about smog tests, then you can just ignore them.
Otherwise, restore everything to the original configuration by opening the lines back up. You may want to do a basic tune up at the same time.

Thanks for the fast reply. I will remove those plugs as i
do have to pass smog here in california. Great site and forums!! Thanks again.

Henald, you might want to check with the DMV, because if you have a '79, it may be smog exempt due to the 25 year rule.
Unless that has been changed recently. Or is it 30 years?
I can't remember. The newest vehicle I have registered in California is a '65!
Good luck,
Jeff

PS, what part of Ca. are you in?

Hi Jeff
I checked with the CA/DMV and no, my spit is not exempt (bummer). The rule is a vehicle is exempt after 30 years, so i guess i'll keep it for a little longer THEN remove all that smog stuff! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Anyway, i am here in San Diego and thanks again.
