Early Flywheel Question

MG used 2 different flywheels for the early cars - 1 for G/GA engines & 1 for GB engines...I'm trying to identify the GB (early 5-main) flywheel...other than 10.75" diameter, anybody know of the difference between it & the 3-main fly?

5-main has six bolts, a 1-7/8" dia. center opening, dowel holes 180 degrees apart... no 3-main here to compare, but that's measurments I get. Hope that can help a bit. Dowel diameter is : 0.441" (please account for a bit of "patina").

The only differences between a MGA & a 3 main MGB are that the MGB has 3 dowel pins to locate the pressure plate while the MGA has 2. Also, the MGA is 29# & the MGB is 21#

I don't know anything about 5 main flywheels.

5-main has three dowels to locate cover also. The dowels referred to above are the crank/flywheel locator dowels. This isn't helping much, durnit. Wish I had a 3-main lyin' around.

Found it......The 3 main flywheel is 12" w/ring gear & 10.75" w/o.

Not too likely the ring gears are different is it? I can't locate the 5-main flywheel, used the crank and the clutch cover for the above numbers. NO clue where I've stuffed the spare flywheel.

HA.....None of the 3 main cranks or flywheels have locating dowels.(Just 6 holes for the bolts)

Mystery solved /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif.....Victory Lap! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Think I've got it figured out...the early 5-main flywheel only has 6-holes at the crank - no hole for a dowel...it has dowels for the pressure plate...its kinda wide at its outer edge (not tapered)...oh, & is 1-.75" diameter + ring gear

hehehe whatzat beat ya too it.

WHO SEZ we're not on top of this stuff!?!?!

HEH.... You want ANSWERS? We GOT 'em! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

I've gotta do a better job of sorting my flywheels rather than just standing them up next to one another in a corner!

A white paint pen is a really great marker and is used by all the good shops. hehe.

Good one, Jack....hehehehe...I was thinknig a yellow one

Oh, white is for body parts. lol

We just used a white grease pen when I worked at the steel mill.

There are paint pens as well, and it seems to take the weather, etc better. They come with many different size tips.

You wuz a mill rat?!?! ME too!

"NDT Inspector, Level-II." That an' four bucks...

I was an Air Force Inspector General with DLSC for four years. Did all the neat stuff, sub parts, a/c parts, tank parts, etc etc. Actually went to contractors plants and reviewed his procedures for QC, etc.
