Dynolicious - a dynomometer in your pocket!

Is this cool or what? One of the "Apps" that you can download for yor iPhone or iPod Touch (after forking over $13) turns the little fella into a dynomometer!

Yes, that's right - the program you install on the iPod/Phone uses the 3-axis accelarometers built into the device to measure acceleration as you tear up the road, and based on that gives speed, distance and, after dialing in the weight of the car - the horsepower! All you need is a quiet length of road, (not quied for long) and fom a stoped start, "put the boot in" as they say.

I am not making this up!

Got it loaded on my iPod Touch and itis easy to use, and seems pretty accurate (gave me my speed bang-on). And no GPS required.

'Aint technology wonderful!

So how does it work? Is it like a rolling dyno? Do you put the driving tires on the touch screen and floor it?

I downloaded it tonight and it really messed with itunes bad enough that I had to reload it. I'll give it a try tomarrow. Should be fun to see how slow the truck is.

Nooooooooooo! (CRUNCH!)

How it works? Steve Jobs' pixie dust or something like that most likely.

One theory is that it uses the acceleraometers built into the iPod/Phone. These, as the name suggests, measure acceleration. So from a standing start, integrate the acceleration over time and you get velocity, integrate again and you get distance. And speed times acceleration times mass gets HP.

All that sounds far fetched to me though - so I'm sticking to the pixie dust explaination.

A little caveat on the price - Its $13 if you already have the 2.0 software upgrade for the iPod/Phone. If not, then the software upgrade is another $10, for a total of $23, and if you don't have an iPod Touch or iPhone - its going to cost you $323 for a pocket dynomometer(ouch!).

I figure that, if my V8 MGB outruns Corvettes when its finished, I've got enough horsepower!

well it works. It's fairly accurate as well with my trucks speedy 0 to 60 time of 18 seconds. I sure hope my mgs can beet that. Posted from my I touch

Just heard about this, will have to add it to my new iPod Touch. Very clever usage of the accelerometer.
