Wedge Dropped another engine in my TR7v8

I set up another V8 for my TR7 (details unimportant) while the wife was visiting her folks I decided to drop it in while the garage was available. I couldn't get it started to clear the garage for her when she got back home. After she was home for a day it started right up. All I did was change a new set of NGK sparkplugs for a used set of Bosch plugs. You would have thought that at least one plug would fire. I think that my car missed my wife, even though she rarely drives it.

I battled an off and on hard start/ no start problem. Turned out to be the electronics in the stock distributor. Dropped in an old Mallory dual point I had laying around and no more problems. The thing that I couldn't figure out was the way it was so intermittent. Fine for days and then nothing. Hope your problem goes away on it's own.

Mine seems to have a hot start problem now.

Hot start is much more common. Do you have a high torque starter? If not, that should solve the problem. I can usually find a used one in a local junk yard for $40 or so, but there are tons of mid 90s Rovers in the yards around here.

Have one in my garage. But I don't think the one on the car is a stock unit as it is just a little bigger than the Hi Torque. This is a transplanted motor by Brad

The starter gets very hot down there by the cats. The TR8 originally came with a metal bolt on heat shield, as well as heat shields for the front half of the exhaust system, and a fiber heat shield for the underside of the tranny tunnel. I like to use the Bosch starters that come on the later Rovers. They are smaller, lighter and have more torque. They have a clip on heat shield that wraps around the main part of the starter. Once in a while you get lucky and find them still attached in the junk yards.

Probably is - Brad's the one who put me on to the Range Rover starters.

Last time I looked for a rebuild or new one on line, some places were getting $400 plus for those original Bosch starters. $40 junk yard ones sound better.

I've got one of Woody's in a box. Guess I need to decide if I need to put it on.
