I am currently restoring a BJ7 Heaely which unfortunately I did not dis-assemble. Is there a specific position for the 2 dowell bolts ( aec3487) on the bell housing ? There is a total of 7 bolts on the housing. I have restored E types and Mark2 Jags. before but a Healey is new to me.

I'm a Triumph guy, know nothing about Healeys. But on Triumphs with "dowel bolts", the holes they fit in are considerably tighter tolerance than the remainder of the holes. You should literally have to tap them into place.
An ordinary bolt/hole has perhaps .020" of clearance for easy assembly, while for the "dowel bolts" to be effective at maintaining alignment, they should have less than .002" of clearance.
No idea if this is a problem for Healeys, but for Triumphs there are some vendors selling the wrong bolts. The "dowel" bolts are supposed to have precision ground shanks, long enough to fit most of the way through the rear plate and bellhousing. At least one vendor is selling ordinary bolts (which as usual have slightly undersize shanks). I wound up making my own from drill rod.
