The little nylocks are sooo weak it ain't funny.
I'm installing longer studs and lug nuts instead.
On EVERY corner!
Note the size in one pic ( I removed one from the other size so you can see the weak little suckers). The stripped stud is one of the ones that gave up.
The other pic shows a regular lug nut for comparison and
the longer studs I'm installing.
I'm also converting the fronts to wire wheel hubs and eliminating the adapters up front. That will narrow the track
just a bit which I want to do.
The rears will remain as I need the competition axles
in the rear and comp axles for wire hubs weren't available.
I think they make them now but I'd have to change rear axle housing and a bunch of other stuff. I think the new studs and lug nuts should suffice.
This is a far as I could get today before my back started acting up.
My long time friend and fellow BE owner (that's his Caterham in the Devil's Fork video) is coming by on Monday to complete repairs.

David, if had the hub off, I got a socket you need to tighten it with a 1/2" torque wrench, modified for just this job to fully seat the thin hub nut. Loose the tab asher, it's joke and would never stop a loose hib form coming off, clean the threads really good, use red loctite and torque to 100 ft. lbs. Remeber the left side (driver's side ) is left handed thread and the right side roght handed threads. This is waht most of us Spridget racers do. I can't tell you how many times I seen those nuts chiseled on, which is a really careless thing to do.

I can bring the socket tommorow, if you need it.

Thanks Hap. I have the correct 1- 7/8 socket in a 3/4 inch drive.
I normally use anti-seize on lug nuts. NOT for this application however.
Red on hub nut and blue locktite on the lug nuts baby!

AMEN! I've said many a prayer of thanks since this accident.
I know how lucky I was/am.
Funny how when I came to after passing out and laid there
in excruciating pain I first rolled my eyes then the fingers then the toes. Next was prayers of thanks. Sort of lighting a candle rather than cursing the darkness thing.
I give thanks every day for my deliverance.

Thanks to Alan we got the hub pulled. After test fitting the new longer studs we found they were too long. Alan has volunteered to cut them to the custom size required for what
I'm doing.
Next work session is Sunday coming. Hope to have it all buttoned
up then.
I also found out my back isn't 100%. OUCH. Back in a brace
and meds mode for a few days.
No more pushing the envelope for me.

Pic of new beefier mounting of the wire wheel adapter
via real lug nuts. Install should be Sunday.
Alan discovered the hub bearings were not fully seated
and fully seating the bearings gained some stud length available. This means I don't have to install new studs on
the driver's side. The passenger side studs were toast as the earlier pic shows.

She's back

Ol Screamin' Mimi is back in service, thanks in no small part
to my good friend Alan. He came by today and we finished the
job. I feel a LOT better knowing we've beefed up what was
a weak link in the car's set up.
Hap, we ditched the washers on the axles and used red locktite.
The lug nuts got a dose of blue locktite.
We cleaned all thread surfaces with carb cleaner and followed recommended torque settings.
Heck we even rotated the tires while we had them off.
Alan flat out refused compensation for his help but I have
a treat in mind for him he will not be expecting.
The wife will be happy we can put her MGB back in the Buggy Barn now as well.
All around a very satisfied feeling.

Woo Pow!

Took ol Mimi out for a spin this morning. Gawd I love this thing! Did a few run ups to 7k for the first time since the
twin HS4 were installed. (May 8th trip I didn't need to rev
it past about 5.5K as that was a cruise)
Wicked fast and nasty loud past 6K. Guess I woke my neighbors.
Feels nice and tight. The rotation of the tires helped a lot.
The previous owner had it set with toe out and the front had
some uneven wear as a result. Not bad but some. Putting
those on the rear and the evenly worn tires on the front
eliminated the slight "shimmy" I got when around 80 mph.
Smooth as silk now. I'm using about a 1/16 toe in.
It is harder to start now. Easy to over choke. Runs pretty
rough till it warms and once past 120 degrees all is well.
Idles at about 1100 rpm.
All in all it was a great morning. Long time coming.
I think the wife and I will take a cruise to the outdoors store,
Sunrift Adventures,in ol Screamin Mimi today.
It is soooo good to have Mimi back. I was grinning from ear to ear this morning.
I'll throw in some new plugs after I fine tune the carbs today.
She's back...watch your 6.

It was a place called Caro-Mi up near Saluda N.C.
Neat old restaurant. Fresh trout is the featured item.
The chicken livers were a side dish Hap and Mary Jane
ordered. Lynn got a side of scallops and I went for the country ham on the side.
Good eats. This was a couples dinner. We'll give you a ring
next time we go.
I was telling Hap about the colors for the TR3 you are doing.
Those colors are going to look sharp!

actually got my grandson looking for some summer snipes the other day, He was still looking for them the next day, but I had to explain to him they sleep under rocks in the daylight.

He was disapointed in his search but I promised him next time we went camping in the National forest I would get him started earilier with a good Mag and white cotton sack
