Do It Yourself Paint job

Re: Do It Yourself Paint job +pics 3/6/09

dr. E was right...should have left it alone. had to sand off most of the last coat of paint to get everything evened out. i'll get two more coats on in the next few days then hit it with polishing compound when it cures. i must admit, my mind keeps wandering toward spraying ot myself until i think about the real mess i could make of the thing.

i have the boot lid off, luggage rack off, rear lights off. all thats left is the bumper then i'll start stripping the rear fenders, boot lid and rear deck....but first a couple of green beers....hey...I am Irish .

I have 2 coats on my B/E hardtop right now. I'm using brightside paint. Every flaw I fuss over. They have all been due to my prep work before primer. The thing I keep telling myself is if I had to spray it, I would have added extra time and cleanup that I do not have with the roller. The best paint jobs involve a lots of color sanding and you can't get away from doing that. I hope to be done by the weekend, but the gloss, result and $ will be worth it. I'm getting up the courage to do my TR and BE with the roller. The nice thing is I can do one piece at a time at my own pace. Keep on rolling!

i was actually wondering if the brightside would self-level better than the rustoleum? are you going to bare metal? if so, what type of primer or prep are you using?

post or email me a few pics when you can.

The hood is fiberglass. On the metal I will be going down to bare metal and I will follow the label instructions for metal . Using an etching primer, then a sanding primer then brightside. I levels very well and reminds me alot of POR 15 in the way it levels.

POR-15 used to fade badly in sunlight, supposedly some of that has been fixed. I'm not sure that I'd use it for a top side paint job though...

Re: Do It Yourself Paint job +pics 3/6/09

Both are advertised as top coats. Highly UV resistant. One was developed for marine applications... doesn't get much more "out in the open" than that... Normal POR15 is supposed to be top-coated and will fade if exposed to sunlight... they tell you that...

that hood looks great!

when i called interlux (who makes brightside) and told them i was painting bare metal they gave me different steps for priming than what was on their website or the container. i can't recall specifics but it involved application of one or two more of their products before the paint. i think the paint is a great choice. i like the UV reistance and the teflon like additice to reduce chipping.
