Distributor Advance Setting

Hey guys:

Using a mallory electronic electronic distributor with a stock coil what would the proper spark advance be? Would it be 8 degrees before # 1 TDC timed with a strobe light at idle? Vacume advance connected or blocked while setting? Thanks.

Set full advance to no more than 30 degrees, at 3000 rpm. Then go back to see what the timing is at idle.
