Differential shifted over to the left

I replaced the entire rear end on my '74 B with a rebuilt differential (quantum), Low mileage GT springs (I know some of you don't agree), polybushings, brakes, shocks, u-bolts the whole nine yards. The problems I noticed before I changed it were that the left Tire was rubbing and it was twitching when I let off on the gas. The other thing I noticed before the removal was that my left tire was closer to the edge of the wheel well than the right. I assumed that this would go away with the re-install. The car does not seem to have been in a rear end collision and appears to be all original.

After swapping it out, no more tire rub. No twitching and the car handles great. The problem still is that the rear is too far over the left still. about 1/2".

Has anyone ever heard of this and is there anything that can be done to shift it back over to center?

MGB differentials were built that way: 1/2" to 5/8" offset to the left...probably had something to do with bodies built by 1 contractor & rear ends by another...

If you want to shift it back to center, just reposition the spring hangers on the differential case itself.

I've heard of that but did not believe it. I'm hearing it again and it's starting to sink in. At least my tires don't rub and the handling is greatly improved.

It's common for the axle to sit off center. Some cars are more centered than others, seemingly at random. So long as the wheel track is correct, it's nothing to worry about. If you want to run wider tires then you may or may not have a problem depending on how much clearance you need.

I had problems with the 195/60 with the old setup. It rubbed. No problems now but it really close.

I measured a spare I have and it is 3/8" off center. Man!
