I am replacing the differential in a latter hypoid type rear axle. I have reviewed the service manual. I will remove the axle shafts and then unbolt the existing diff, bolt in the new one. Because I had no issues prior to the change I expect to only replace the gaskets, o rings and oil seals. It seems straight forward but since I have never done it. Any thoughts as to what I might encounter. thanks jtb
 
Hi John,
I can't think of many issues. Make absolutely sure that the replacement is set up properly & in good condition. Tooth contact, back lash, etc. The pinion bearing shims are the most likely thing to go wrong. When I replaced mine, the housing stud pattern was very slightly miss aligned with the carrier housing & nearly a press fit over the studs. Verify the outer bearings for condition & tight fit in the hubs. Verify that the hub seal running surfaces are in good condition. Good luck,

Thanks Dave; The new diff has been done using the 3.54 from Lempert by a shop I have used before with no problems. On an another project we have discussed, my conversion to bn2 front brakes, I need to source shoes for the this but haven't found any in catalogues or on eBay. Any ideas. thanks jtb
 
Hi John,
Front brake shoes for the BN2 are a bit scarce. They were only used on the BN2 thru BN6. Hemphill's was offering front sets #HYD-135 with a $30 core charge. I assume this means you don't have to exchange them. Give them a call. I occasionally see a set on Ebay, but they are few & far between.
