...trying to replace it with a new one. I'll be doing prep work all this week for a Sunday weld-a-thon.

good luck, I'm not much of a welder.
 
Go slow and check alignment with other body panels and wings often.
 
The trick to patch work like yours is to make many small patches on a panel that fit together to complete the repair.

Don't try to complete the patch all at once or from a single piece of metal. Add a piece, add another piece, etc then grind out to blend it all together.

You'll have great results.
