TR6 'Cutting-down' a TR6 distributor ?

Bob_TR6 said:
Hi Todd:

I wanted a trigger wheel that fit on the back side of the harmonic balancer--out of the way--like stock fitments do. I couldn't--at the time--find anything that would work the way I wanted, so I drew a few things up, had my friend (with a laser cutter  )cut me out one or two basswood blanks to check fit, and then sent the file off to a waterjet company to have executed in steel.

It still took a little fine tuning around to fit. :frown:

That said, I've got no idea if the trigger wheel for an Econoline would've fit as nicely.

But I'm happy with the way it looks. With the exception that the timing indicator pointer had to be cut--the trigger wheel spins through that space.

FWIW, I've fitted Megasquirt to control the ignition--along with adapters from Patton Machine for the fuel injectors

Hi Bob,

The Econoline one is big and bulky and ugly. Your solution is probably much more elegant.

Thanks and cheers!

Todd

Keith--Those pdf files about the conversion would be where I got the push to go through with it -- :yesnod:

Doug:

1)Well, setting aside cosmetics, there's not a whole heckuvalot to these cars.

2)a. I don't know if a distributor from a spit would just drop into place--length and drive dog?
b. I happened to have had a (bad)(and the wrong one for my TR6) distributor in my hands when I wanted to do this. And, aren't the only parts that are hard to get for these distributors the tach drive gears? I dunno.
c. It never occurred to me. :frown:

I did think about doing it--vanishing resources and parts, originality, etc. Then I realized that a TR6 (for sure mine anyway) was never going to be a big Healey--in either cost or scarcity.

Of course, my TR6 is one of the most scarce in the world--it's the only one owned by me

The distributor itself will fit. For the accuracy of the tach, what must match is the drive gear ratio.

Until working on Triumphs I was much more familiar with Lucas distributors. There must have been some gentlemen's agreement where Lucas and Delco used the exact same mounting diameters, lengths, and drive dog dimensions (at least during the 1960s and 1970s). You can swap Lucas distributors for your Delco but you would of course sacrifice the tach drive. This is true for 4- and 6-cylinder dizzys.
