Crypt Car Set Back

Power to yellow? Yes Constant
Power to white/green with key on- yes

No power to green fuse block

Anti-theft cutout switch yes. Toggle has no effect
on green fuse box. .....BUT.........

replacing the black ground wire on the cutout switch
that must have got knocked off when I removed the dash
support unit instantly powered up the dead 50% of the
wires in the car.

Thanks ALL: A great cloud of depression is now lifted.
Back to the task at hand. BTW: Jeff reports he has
rebuilt and refurbished my totally PO buggered up distributor. It should arrive next week.

Dale,

After reading your description of what's hot and what's not, I would also look toward the ignition switch, as that energizes the power relay on the circuits that are dead. Coming off the power terminal is a yellow wire that goes to the Bat side of the ignition switch. That should be hot all the time. If it is, proceed to the white/green wire, which should be hot when you turn on the ignition switch. That's the wire that energizes the power relay. If that is dead when you turn on the ignition, then the ignition switch is most likely at fault. You can jump the yellow wire to the white/green wire to see if it energizes the relay and powers the dead circuit up. Also, Dan's schematic shows an anti-theft cutout switch on the ground side of the power relay coil. Do you happen to have one of those wired in?? If so, is it in the open position??

Great Call Martx-5... Sometimes Advice Needs to Come in 2ssssssssss ;-)

Ahaa!! The dreaded loose ground trick! I suspected such an evil demon hiding under there. Most of these types of wounds are usually self inflicted, albeit unintentionally. Been there and done that to myself many times, which is why I doubt me more than the car at times.

Can you begin to feel the warm sand under your toes yet???

Get a bigger memory card for all of the beach pics that you will be taking in a week or so......

Where are these bullet connectors located? Were you under the dash or working out in the open? I don't disagree with Art, but I'm wondering if you inadvertently pulled a connector off, either at the ignition switch or somewhere under the dash.

If Art's test don't show anything or even before doing them check the area where you worked to insure that no connections came loose. Pull them off and then push them on again to insure that they just don't "look" connected.

Removing the distributor should not have this affect on an entire wire harness. The distributor is not a switching mechanism for all of those power circuits of the car.

I am Thinking about making a Special Spider Ground Wire Kit for Dale. It Works kind of like this,

- attach Lead alligator clip to Mr. Jones
- attach Extremity Clips to all things that Should be Grounded
- insert Red Bulb into Dale's Mouth

Things that Don't Work Should Work when Dale touches them with Any of his Fingers... and As an Added Bonus-- Rudolph Dale Glows!!!!

Dale,
Or should we call you Sparky? I'm glad to hear that you didn't fry anything.
This thread is also a testiment to the value of this forum. There was an honest outpouring of sympathy, support and suggestions. Followed by your account of a simple mistake, a little good natured ribbing and a sigh of relief that reverberated throughout this Triumph community. You won't see this type of exchange on many forums.
There is another way to test your circuits without having the battery connected. It's a bit more cumbersome. You can use a multi meter with an audible feature. It requires that you clip one lead on one end of the wire and probe the other end like you are doing with your test light. If there is continuity you will hear a buzz or beep.
The offer still stands for a cutoff switch.

It also provides a very good use for that highly annoying (usually disconnected) TR6 seat belt warning buzzer if you care to use one for the noise value. It saves having to get in and out of the car to see if a light is lit when you are working alone.

BOBH: Actually I did fry a wire pretty good. I thought
maybe the ignition switch needed a ground wire on that
empty terminal. So I put one there and then hooked the
battery back up. The wire diagram show a tiny grounding symbol on the switch.

Sparks immediately flew at the grounding bar, a loud
crackle followed and a puff of really nasty smeeling
smoke rose like a mini mushroom cloud. The wire went
limp and once it was cool enough to touch, I removed it.

I am now even more convinced than ever the electrical
system in the Crypt Car will only function if God wills
it so.

Hey Dale,

When you send back my Green alligator clips, please insert your old Computer Mouse... mine is Driving Me Crazy!!!!

Now you are an official "Triumph brother". You've experienced the terrible smell and acrid black smoke associated with frying wires. Congratulations, you have passed and we will notify you when it's time for your 2nd degree.

This is a secret, but since no ones listening, I'll clue you in. The 2nd degree is the clutch replacement and the 3rd degree is the complete upholstery kit. Just don't tell anyone, OK?

Bad News for ya, Mike!

That wire that I smoked? I used your green alligator
clip wire to attach it to the ignition switch.
It's kinda limps as well.

Well the green fuse block is now powered up and
I've spent the past few hours sitting inside
the Crypt Car removing terminal ends and replacing
them with crimped and soldered connector or bullets.

Mike brought me this slick little mini blow torch.
So, I'm even installing that shrink wrap stuff on
the terminals. Looks so professional even to me.

Got the ignition switch, flasher switch and cutout
switch all with new terminal ends. Installed
seven(7) new ground wires as well.

Funny thing though, now my turn signals no longer
function, my gas gauge DOES function while my
temperature gauge is pegged at 250* with the
Crypt Car stone cold dead.

Oh yeah, and my brake warning light just came on!!

Ever onward!!
