Crane Cams Electronic Ignition Module

Would like to communicate with anyone who has installed a Crane Fireball XR700 Electronic Ignition module on their Healey.

Thanks,

Ray

If you haven`t already bought it I have 3 words for you. PERTRONIX PERTRONIX PERTRONIX. I have one in my Healey and 2 in older trucks and they have worked flawlessly for years. Simple to install and no one knows they are there

When I purchased the BJ7 it had an old Allison Electronic Module installed. Allison was purchased by Crane Cams some time ago. I contacted Crane to ask some questions about the Allison Module. Crane indicated that they would replace the old module with a new updated Crane Module if I would send them the old Allison one. That is how I came to be the receipent of a Crane Module.

The directions that came with the Crane Module do not indicate how the module receives power from the battery. The wiring of the old Allison and the new Crane are not the same. The Allison had two additional wires, the Crane has three wires, two going to the coil, and one to ground.

I need to communicate with someone who has installed one of the Crane modules so they can walk me through the proper installation.

Thanks,

Ray

Ray, since battery power is normally routed to the coil it would seem that all you need to do is follow the instructions for wiring the leads to the coil.--FWIW--Keoke

Hi Ray,
You didn't say if you had pos. or neg. ground. The link below has pretty complete instructions. Keoke is correct:

Assuming that you have negative ground, follow the instructions on page 10. A switched power wire, plus 12v, goes to coil + and also the module red wire goes to coil +. The module yellow wire goes to coil -. The black module wire goes to ground.

If you have an old coil with terminals marked SW & CB, SW is coil - & CB is coil +.

If you have positive ground, a special module # 720-0231 should be used. See page 18.
A switched power wire, negative 12v, goes to the black module wire. The red module wire goes to coil + and also to ground. The yellow module wire goes to coil -.

If you have a standard Healey coil it will measure around three ohms & does not need a ballast resistor. If the coil measures around 1.5 ohms, you need to add a 1.5 ohm ballast resistor between the ignition switch & the coil.

There are also instructions on how to make the tach work on page 16.

Good luck,
