Drew, I forgot about the later shifters with the fat bottom. I'd guess that yours is correct for that tranny. I'll have to check one of mine with the later shifter and see what it looks like. The one I pulled came out of a trans with the skinny shift lever.

You guys beat me to it. The isolation dampener on the late model shifters is too large for the plate to slide past so they went to the slotted hold down.
 
I kept chasing this thread to get to the same point ChrisS did above! I have a couple of those pieces of both early and late type, but they are marginal to say the least! That has to be the one piece that is "not available" that has been the most abused piece by DPOs!!! It hurts to even think about all that shifter-banging abuse!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif

As a result of this discussion, I went as far as to pull off the shift boot on the Bugeye and look at the plate on the smooth case there. It looks in pretty good shape, really -- box probably only has maybe 40k miles on it after all.

Hopefully the old style shifter will fit the later style gearbox.

It's a straight swap, Drew. The fat portion of the later shifter is actually a rubber filled vibration damper. The portion that engages the shift forks is identical. The shifter buzz will still let you know you're driving a Bugeye! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I thought the smooth case shifter and the ribcase shifter had different lengths below the pivot. I'll look when I get home, but I think Drew will need an early non-isolated ribcase lever. The isolation damper will look funny without the shift boot.
 
Geez, Chris, it's been a long time for me messing with a smoothcase, but I thought the shifters were the same. I don't know if I've got a smoothcase shifter to compare, but I can pop a ribcase one into a smoothcase and see what happens.

I remember reading somewhere that if you wanted to use the smooth case shifter, you needed to swap over the entire remote change assembly. Can't remember where I read that, though.

All sorts of little details... lots of variants at play here. A lifetime to learn -- good thing I'm still young. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
 
I just wonder how many folks have added to check the shifter hold down for wear to their lists.
 
You certainly got me thinking about it, Jack! I almost pulled the shifter off the smooth case in the Tunebug (still installed in the car) to look at it. For certain I'll be going over it carefully when I rebuild the ribcase for the new motor.
 
This is a side by side comparison of the shifters. To make the pivot equal I sat them in one of those peg board screw driver holders. This is what it looks like. The ribcase ones are about 1/4" longer than the smooth case.

Thanks, Chris. I guess that answers the question. Should the remote change assembly be swapable between the 2 types?

Is the later ribcase different than an earlier one?
 
Shoot I knew that but did not remember. Sigh, old brain.
 
As I recall-- The remotes ARE interchangable but just that the later type is "short throw" while the older ones made you bang your knuckles into the dash.

So to add some additional quesitons to this debate. I've got a smoothcase in Bugsy my '68 Sprite that is attached to a 1098. I've got a 1275 and Ribcase in the back of the garage that will eventually be instaleld. Will the shifter from the smoothcase fit into the rib case or do I need to srart looking for a rib case shift lever? I think from reading this thread it won't.
