Chasing Classic Cars?

Wayne Carini represents what has gone wrong with our hobby. Speculators and investors not car enthusiasts are buying those cars for the most part. Many of these cars I'm sure are never driven between auctions. He's a front man for those investors. A Porsche Spider selling for $2.1 Million? Give me a break. And in yesterday's NY Time auto section, a 1969 Fiat Spider sold for over $48,000.00. On two separate times, I had custody of not one but two Arnolt Bristols owned by a cousin. Today, it will set you back $150-$200K for one. Way outta my league. The same thing happened to the coin and art markets. Money corrupts.

I've been looking for a copy of this episode. I own the cars in the background. In the barn is a 59 TR3A, 63 Sunbeam Alpine 3 GT, 66 TR4A, 73 TR6 and an 81 TR8. All the cars live on Put In Bay and get used weekly. I've collected them starting with the TR3A in 1973, using the last $800. bucks from our wedding. My long suffering wife grew up with sports cars and in fact their only family car in 1960 (with 7 kids in the family) was an Austin Healey 3000. I had the pleasure of "hiding" the 1955 AC Bristol for a few days prior and after the filming. Wayne Carini is very approachable and a genuinely nice person. The car was presented to Joe Bojalad in conjunction with the annual Put In Bay Road Race Reunion commemorating the races held on the island 1952-1959 and one last race in 1963. The Bojalad's have brought the car back to the island for subsequent reunions and have even drove it around the airport race track for some spirited laps. Both father and son are wonderful people and they drive the car quite often around the Pittsburgh area so it is no garage queen. I heartily recommend for anyone interested in a nostalgic vintage sports car event to look into the Put In Bay Road Race Reunion to be held August 31, September 1 & 2, 2015. Besides wheel to wheel racing at a 1 mile plus airport track, parade laps for registered cars around the original village street race track, etc. there is the chance to see 100 or so 50's and 60's sports cars running around the island just like they did 60 years ago. Check out the PIBRRR website for more info. Who knows maybe the AC will be back this year as well. Even if you don't come to the reunion come up to visit on a Sunday where we have an antique car parade with anywhere from 40 to 100 antique cars.

I saw the cars in the background but could not tell what they were. That Ace was beautiful and I bet Healey_Z is right about the money.

According to Hagerty, that may even be a bit low. To my mind the car has moved from the collector enthusiast (driver) class to the collector investor class. That certainly puts it way out of my league but a great car either way.
